Brendan O’Neill on the money again. A most unexpected ally, who has been all over this issue for years.

Much as I despise the wokie toddlers that seem to comprise the modern left (although I’m in the Labour Party myself), Brendan O’Neill is a contrarian prick. Spiked (formerly the RCP) is deeply sinister, and O’Neill and Lady Semtex Claire Fox are very unpleasant individuals.

Abuse and ad hominem? Typical kneejerk lefty intolerance of other people's opinions. See - two can play at that game.

Pre-2000, Spiked was called Living Marxism, not 'RCP', whatever that is, and Claire Fox is nothing to do with it.

Try reading the article first, and then criticise.

If you can.

They were formerly the Revolutionary Communist Party. Do try and keep up. Claire Fox is very much involved with them.

DismantledKing Mon 04-Oct-21 12:57:59

Living Marxism was sued into oblivion as they were denying the Bosnian genocide. They’re sinister individuals. Might be worth doing some reading @LarryTheLurker, otherwise you just look more than a bit daft.

Brendan O'Neill an ally? An ableist ally who uses his publication to disparage and gaslight people with Long Covid and people with ME (majority women and kids).

Brendan O'Neil may appear to support women - but other women and kids he throws under the bus. Women and kids with long term illness are the wrong kind of women and kids who exist on the wrong side of O'Neills survival of the fittest ideology.

It's not very often I've ever used the word rebarbative x2 in 10 minutes (another thread) but it's yet again wholly merited when describing both O'Neill and Fox.

I resent the thought that I must overlap with them in some areas (time of day, existence of gravity) but it's realistic that it must happen.

I have to recognise that O'Neill is a gifted polemicist. I'm still almost completely opposed to him but it would absurd for me to deny his skill and breadth of knowledge although I deplore the way he uses it and the causes that he services.

It’s associating with tosspots like Spiked that give MRAs all the ammunition they need about those with GC views. Completely counterproductive.

DismantledKing Mon 04-Oct-21 13:10:06

Did I say MRAs? I meant TRA’s of course (although there’s a significant overlap naturally)

RoyalCorgi Mon 04-Oct-21 13:56:20

I disapprove of Spiked for the reasons already mentioned and yet this is a fucking fantastic article, so let's forget the ad homs for a moment and celebrate an absolutely blistering piece of writing:

"I know self-identification is all the rage, but it is a bit much to ‘identify as’ a crusader against misogyny when you have contributed, whether wittingly or unwittingly, to a new culture of misogyny. One in which women are monstered, censored and sometimes even sacked merely for talking about problematic male behaviour. One in which you can be branded scum and a bigot for arguing that women should have their own spaces in which no biological male is allowed to enter. One in which women are called hags and bitches and subjected to sexual threats by armies of faceless Twitter crazies simply for suggesting that some dubious men will exploit trans loopholes in order to get close to women."

Artichokeleaves Mon 04-Oct-21 14:04:57

Not getting into the whole are they pure enough to speak stuff.

Apparently being made to look at a male appendage against your will is bad when it’s a ‘cis’ bloke who’s doing it but not so bad when it’s a ‘trans woman’.

That. Good point, well made. Are women supposed to ask the male appendage owner how said appendage owner identifies before deciding whether or not they're allowed to safeguard themselves or be distressed? And predicate their boundaries entirely on a male person's personal choice of internal self realisation at that moment? Which places the male in really quite a stupendous position of superiority over the female patiently waiting to be told what they think and feel, but also assumes no male will ever lie.

I know self-identification is all the rage, but it is a bit much to ‘identify as’ a crusader against misogyny when you have contributed, whether wittingly or unwittingly, to a new culture of misogyny.

Equally and absolutely true. Women web-wide are noting and naming men such as David Lammy as hypocritical beyond belief. Or apparently, since they are the same ones holding the "excuse me, can you tell me my pronouns and whether or not you're committing indecent assault on me?" views for women, possibly they don't think women are human enough to remember what they said yesterday or the day before.

OP posts an article. The first tranche of responses are 'horrible people, bad people, sinister people, evil people'.
Read the f***ing article!

I stated he's a gifted polemicist and nobody is entirely wrong about everything.

That's a skilfully written piece and I'd agree with much of it.

ItsRainingProstateOwners Mon 04-Oct-21 14:26:49

He really gets this area and writes brilliantly on it. Did you see his review of Shon’s book?

I can’t comment on anything else as I don’t know enough about it.

FourTeaFallOut Mon 04-Oct-21 14:29:23

You don't have to like him to see that the hypocrisy is legitimate.

2319inprogress Mon 04-Oct-21 14:31:28

That's a great article (I don't care if it's written on the wrong colour of paper etc!)

MrsOvertonsWindow Mon 04-Oct-21 14:34:01

That article is spot on - regardless of his views about anything else.

2319inprogress Mon 04-Oct-21 14:50:01

JCJ is saying the same thing is far fewer words grin

KittenKong Mon 04-Oct-21 15:00:05

I think it’s all definitely being opened wide. Recently i over heard a conversation (2 young adults) that went a bit like:

(Jokey) “Well that’s a bit rude! Be nice...”
“...Or I’ll kill ya! Haha - be niiiiiiiice - or I’ll punch your face in!”
“You loon...”
“Murder! Literal violence!”
“Oh god... what rubbish...”

Much guffawing and snorting.

malloo Mon 04-Oct-21 15:03:42

Cracking article, absolutely nails it. And love those tweets from JCJ, thanks 2319inprogress

That woman has an absolute genius for getting right to the point.

dyslek Mon 04-Oct-21 16:08:17

I think Brendan O'Neil is brilliant and has been great on this issue. I dont agree with everything he says but thats normal and no reason to rubbish him.
So Spiked was Marxism today or whatever, I was in the Labour Party till a few days ago but that does not mean everyone of my opinions should be ignored?

@dyslek - Not bullshit. Factual background on Brendan O'Neill's Living Marxism/now called Spiked, just some of the damaging nonsense they have got up to over the years .....

.
'ITN wins Bosnian war libel case'

'ITN and two of its reporters have won Ł375,000 in High Court libel damages from a Marxist magazine which claimed they had faked pictures of Bosnian Serb war crimes.

Reporters Penny Marshall and Ian Williams were each awarded Ł150,000 over the Living Marxism story which called into question ITN's coverage of the Bosnian war.

The left-wing magazine was also ordered to pay Ł75,000 to ITN for libelling them in a February 1997 article.'

Ad hominem attacks because you disagree with them.
