Hi witches,

I'm pleased to see the Hubbard travesty appearing in aibu, but worry that the increased awareness is going to lead to an increased audience for a not normally popular event. Which the BBC etc will twist into widespread approval.

I realise it's a bit late in the day but was wondering if we witches could cook up some kind of 'why I'm switching off for women' message for Monday. Not with a focus on Hubbard with a focus on who has been displaced. #I stand with....
Then it could be posted in aibu as a woman positive thread (I apologise in advance that I'm not brave enough to do it but I have poor mental health and aibu is the real viper pit)

I was also wondering if this already exists as a message as I'm not on twitter so could have missed an obvious one.

There are only 14 places available per Olympic weight category. Hubbard has taken one of these female spaces. This means a woman has lost out on her place to make room.

Inclusion and fairness is the spirit of the Olympics.
That's why I will be boycotting all coverage on Monday.
I stand with Roviel Detenamo. An athlete who should embody the spirit of the Olympics. Who overcame true adversity to become an exceptional sportswoman.
From Nauru, a small island in the Pacific Ocean, she's a weightlifter. Weightlifting has brought Nauru much deserved glory. With a population of only 10,000 this tiny country has produced a total of 10 Olympians, all except two have been weight-lifters.

So why am I boycotting the sport that should have been Nauru's shit at glory?
This should have been Roviel’s first Olympics. She would have been the fourth Nauruan women to ever become an Olympian, and the first ever heavy weight woman.

But the IOC’s transgender inclusion policy meant her space was stolen.

In the rush to be inclusive the IOC have excluded a woman from her own category.

As Samoa's prime minister,Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, noted, trans people have every right to play sport and compete, but should compete in their own category and not at the expense of women.

So in solidarity with the woman who have lost opportunities, tomorrow I will keep my television off and avoid all internet articles about the result. I know in no way my small gesture can make it up for the women who have lost out.
The women who've lost an opportunity.
The women and girls who've lost a role model.
But I hope you join me in standing for women.

Women like the indomitable Li Wenwen shouldn't have their moment to shine taken away because of the selfishness of one individual.

I always watch weightlifting and will be watching again to support the women there who have worked and trained endless hours to deserve their place.

What the IOC and IWF have allowed is utterly shameful but it is not the fault of the female athletes.

There’s only 5000 or so households in the UK where TV ratings are calculated through those special box things, so if you haven’t got one then your views aren’t counted or recorded at all.

It's an estimate extrapolated from the sample of viewers.

That used to be true, but these days they use device data also.

If you're using a "broadcaster video on demand service" to watch telly e.g. iPlayer, (whether live streamed or video), that data is most likely captued.

They combine it with the panel data.

Hubbard won't win. By design or accident, the Chinese lifter is too good.
Most likely is bronze or silver and either will be used to illustrate there's nothing to see here. With the obvious age and fitness factors ignored.

Oops sorry, my info was outdated! I did wonder why they didn’t take advantage of things like smart TVs and such and use them for ratings but it seems they now do! So yes I now think your idea is a good one OP. And thanks @33feethighandrising

I've had second thoughts on boycotting the whole thing because of what Lady said.
Will switching off when Hubbard steps up actually be recorded. Are things that sophisticated?

Don't forget, that curiosity is good. It's good because there is likely to be a backlash whether Hubbard wins a medal or not. The IOC are already aware they are being unfair, and when you consider that the people who made this decision were all men (although a journalist pointed out to me that there was a woman at the top table - it was mtf trans

I think you have to have discovery to watch it live. I don't know how many people have that.

I think but not sure that BBC can only show 2 events per day live and the rest is highlights.

So I'm just not sure what impact it will have TBH.

I also wonder why it's thought that anyone would care? If it would even be noticed.

Personally I would feel bad about switching off because of the other competitors.

I'm not sure whether to watch or not (if it is on) for the reasons others have said.

However I am thinking forward to the Commonwealth games.

I've already applied for tickets (locals got early access) and I can't add the weight lifting without cancelling that. Still not sure whether to do that.

Obviously we don't know if Hubbard will be there, but it would send a message if weight lifting were suddenly very popular but if hubbard competes the crowd leaves or turns their backs.

If Hubbard is not there then these women deserve some support.

Sorry to jump in, but it might be worth holding off on the Commonwealth games for now, rumours are tha there is going to be an announcement after the games regarding transgender people and how they compete, they couldn't/wouldn't do it during the games because it would be unfair.

Nothing to say what is in it, just that they are going to do an announcement
