Helen Joyce's Book is Changing the Debate

You can really start to feel some of the issues cutting through at last in the media discussion of Helen Joyce's book. Sex Matters have decided to build on this by asking people to sponsor a copy of the book to be sent to their MP, headteacher of their children's school, employer, HR department, or other policy maker.

"Please sponsor a gift copy to be sent to your Member of Parliament, or devolved national legislature, or to someone else.

Tell us who you’d like to send your gift to, and we’ll put it in the post with a Sex Matters card and your personal message."

Oh excellent! I have sponsored a copy to go to my MP who was not already on the list. Female AND labour, I hope she finds it interesting.

I see my MP David Lammy is already on the list as a recipient. Damn! Missed my chance. Still, I’ve donated a copy anyway

That's a brilliant idea. Do you know how long the book sponsor thing is running? I'd like to do it but will need to wait til payday.

Such a brilliant initiative. Who doesn’t enjoy a free book gift? Mine’s not on there yet.

They’ll have plenty of time to read during the recess. I wonder if we need to get in touch and ask what they thought of it come September?

Tempted to send one to Owen Jones and Mhairi Black.

Good question, and I am not sure. If it is successful I am sure they will keep it running for a while. It is such a great idea.

LOJ would probably want you arrested for a hate crime for that.

If someone did this they'd likely see a hate crime report going to the Police. I'm only half joking.

My next one is heading to Tracy Brabin, West Yorkshire Mayor (or whatever the title is) and also a woman of Labour. Oooh and maybe one to John Robins, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police? And definitely one for Mark Burns-Williamson, police and crime commissioner for the West Yorkshire Police force area. Roll on Pay Day!

Well naturally - women are not allowed to read in Gilead.

This is bloody brilliant! Ideally this will expand from groups of MPs to other groups - as a start:

  • head teachers of all secondary schools
  • CEOs and Heads of Diversity at FTSE500 companies
  • Columnists on all the national newspapers
  • All the presenters of R4 Today, Newsnight, Question Time etc
  • 5 copies for the library in every secondary school in the country

Brilliant. Just sponsored a copy to my female labour mp. Great idea to follow up with a letter asking her if she enjoyed it!

Mark Burns-Willamson's role is obsolete. The powers were absorbed by WY Mayor so 2 for Ms Brabin.

I did think that, but got all confused, two for Ms. Brabin it is!

Great initiative! I’ve just signed up but now thinking I might buy another copy or two. Any chance Helen Joyce could give Sex Matters a bulk discount?!

I think this is a great idea. Even if recipients don't read them, it sends a message - and hopefully some will flip through and start reading.

I've donated for copies to go to my MP and MS.

Just sent one to my (Tory) MP. He wasn’t on the list. He’s rubbish and very dismissive of constituents in my experience (very safe seat). But you never know, he might be looking for some holiday reading.

I sent one to my MP. I've contacted her several times about the threat to women's rights and child safeguarding, and got short standardised replies about diversity and inclusion. I hope the book will help her find her spine.

I've sent one to my male Labour MP, in a very safe seat. I sent him an email about these issues a year or so ago when the Sunday Times did some important coverage and he batted me off with some mealy-mouthed be kind shit

I've no idea what the arrangement is with any particular distributor or bookseller. However, I know that Helen Joyce did not receive any pay during her sabbatical to write this book and she will probably make a substantial loss from it.*

*Unless it takes off in a way that wasn't expected by her or her publishers and would start necessitating additional print runs.
