Here we go again....

ACanadian nurse is under investigation by a health regulator after complaints were made about an "I [heart] J.K. Rowling" billboard she paid for—a signage some argue supports the author's views on transgender people.

Amy Hamm is being investigated by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) following complaints that her view that identifying as trans does not equate to changing biological sex would threaten "trans and gender-diverse communities," according to Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) lawyers representing the nurse.

Anyone else’s head explode at the dissonance in that sentence.

A nurse, being investigated by a professional body that requires extensive knowledge of the human body, for holding the opinion a person cannot change sex. Because to say it out loud is threatening to the group of people who wish to live in a world where everyone pretends to believe the impossible.

Thanks for sharing screamingmeme. I hope sense will prevail in this investigation. I await their judgment statement.

'We cannot, as a society, continue down this path and remain a free society."

Indeed. Good luck, Amy Hamm.

Good luck, Amy.

Another one for the annals of “How Canada managed to be at the forefront of 21st Century McCarthyism”, an in-depth investigation of how a powerful but illogical set of ideas around social justice came to briefly dominate polite society in the teens and twenties, and resulted in countless women being demonised and persecuted for understanding that humans don’t change sex, and women’s rights are important, coming to a bookshop near you in 2035. I’ve got it on pre order.

It's all become a bit 1984, hasn't it? The truth no longer matters;it's just about toeing the line. I am in despair.

'The authors views on transgender people' were stated quite clearly in her essay - she doesn't want to see transgender people discriminated against but discusses the very valid reasons why single sex spaces are important. Half the people saying JKR is transphobic haven't even read the essay, they're just going off social media froth whipped up by people with a very specific agenda.

So Canadians are no longer allowed to like certain mainstream authors? Bloody hell.

Stuff like that is actually an insult to real hate crime and discrimination faced by women and minorities around the world, including trans people.

I'd say half is a generous assessment of how many people have read it. If they have read anything, it's usually Headtilt Monty's clueless 'rebuttal'.

I have a feeling that it is going to be like the American 'war on drugs' -one of those policies everyone can see doesn't work but no political party can exit from without a huge backlash and no one believes in.

Jonathan Yaniv* accused Amy Hamm of voyeurism in a women’s bathroom in the local courthouse in 2019. There was a full investigation and the Crown did not press charges.

*I use the name Jonathan Yaniv because, in accordance with Mumsnet Guidance, and the ‘Karen White’ example, he is best known for his criminal activities, for harassing young girls online and in person, and for wanting to help young girls use a tampon for the first time. Moderators, please note that we have have been able to use the name ‘Jonathan Yaniv’ in the past without deletion. It is relevant.

Well I mean of course I agree with you but the dissonance is there because HER legal team wrote that description. You can bet it is far less obviously bonkers when described by the regulatory body investigating her. And therein lies the rub.

Do you really think the investigating body would miss some pertinent information? Like the part about believing sex is immutable and just focus on beliefs that ‘harm’ others…

Surely not? Wink

Just when I thought my jaw had dropped so much it was unable to drop any further.

Hey I have a question. "It's all a bit 1984" has been said a lot in the last 10 years or so.

When do we switch to "It's more 1984 that then year 1984 itself!?"

Am I misremembering, or was this not Meghan Murphy? Or maybe I heard it on MM's podcast. Apparently she walked into the women's bathroom and JY was in there Angry. When she turned around and walked out JY ran after her and accused her of harassment and taking photos of them. Security took her phone and checked it and everything. Apparently JY can't deal with the fact that women don't want to share women's bathrooms with him.

What a twat!

Erm

So the phrase I love jk Rowling is verboten? Because it's threatening etc?

They'll need to investigate a lot of children.

Along with the dictionaries that have woman= adult human female.

Those words are utterly bland.

I mean FFS.
