Here’s a Mermaids fuck-up to brighten your Sunday morning...

So in a tweet yesterday Mermaids (shock horror) MISGENDERED non-binary Owen J. Harcum, saying that HE had been elected Mayor of Bangor.

A while later they deleted the tweet, reposted it using “they” instead of “he” and issued an apology, basically blaming their accidental hate crime on Grammarly, which I believe is a proofreading app.

Grammarly then responded calling them out on their blatant and quite possibly libellous lie, and so Mermaids deleted that tweet too.

Hope Grammarly sue their asses.

Literal violence against someone who is breaking boundaries not as another male mayor for Wales.

Truly inspirational.

@Mermaids_Gender
for accidentally missgendering me in a tweet. Dont. Dont do that. Mistakes happen, an apology was made and accepted. Moreover Mermaids are an amazing charity who we should all be supporting. Donate, dont hate!

This was theys response.

Awesome- you couldn't make it up.

"Us of the trans community" I think if they had really used Grammarly to check their tweet it would have pointed out that it's "we". More mangling of language.

Bless them, it's almost like they too know a man when they see one.

I’m sure Mayor Owen will be just as forgiving of anyone else mis gendering them right?

And people will be watching....

Thats not how it works chum

You’d think that they would realise that its really not up to the ‘victim’ to say that they aren’t offended, its an accident etc

Mermaids wouldn’t fucking let it go if it was anyone else doing it...and neither would they

It's one thing to misgender (which we are told still hurts regardless if it was an accident: www.vice.com/en/article/mbdx7n/100-ways-be-trans-ally-tips )

but to lie and blame it on software is typically weaselly and dishonest of them.

If whoever posted the tweet can't proofread a tweet themselves, given the amount of money Mermaids are given to recruit staff, then perhaps they are in the wrong job.

Haven't Mermaids always made it clear that you don't need to be the victim to report any transphobic behaviour as a hate crime?

I see in the original tweet Mermaids couldn't decide if non-binary is hyphenated or not. Maybe they should do their non-binary clients and friends the absolute basic courtesy of looking up how to correctly write it? Odd that Grammarly didn't pick up on that either...........

Hahahahahahaha!

What a bunch of absolute clowns.

And how very groundbreaking that another male has been elected to a position of political office....

How can you not even be able to proofread a tweet either when, presumably, your actual job is social media comms.

There are also many other questions to be asked here (that cannot be asked on MN without deletion) including the old double standard about females who might deviate from a strictly professional look running for office etc.
