Medical school erasing sex

This account of an American "progressive" university attempting to erase sex as a concept from its medical school is really worrying. I hope this isn't widespread.

They should all be made to read Caroline Criado Perez's Invisible Woman! I wonder if she's aware of this.

Well-intentioned non-medical people often assume that medical schools are teaching something like, “Gender identity can be fluid and varied, but biological sex is real, binary, and relevant in medical contexts.” This idea is around five years out of date in the most progressive of institutions. I have been told multiple times in several classes that biological sex is a social construct – not just gender. Granted, I can speak only for my institution, but this change has been frustrating and disturbing to witness.

I agree with this medical student that:

the most pernicious of possible harms is not the denial of sex; rather, the denial of sex is just one manifestation of a greater problem, which is the corrosion of critical thinking itself. Whatever you call it – this postmodern poison, the triumph of dogma over data – it is fundamentally incompatible with critical thinking, the most powerful all-purpose tool a physician has at his or her disposal. Starting with a conclusion and working backwards, all while twisting the data to fit a narrative, strikes me as more religious than scientific.

Wow, that statement about the erosion of critical thinking is one of the most powerful I’ve read about on this topic.

So relevant for any and all educators.

But if they don't know what sex a patient with gender dysphoria is how do they know which hormones to prescribe? Confused

I qualified as a doctor in 1980. Every single one of my professors would have treated gender ideology with the scorn it deserves.

I would imagine it's all about the people with ovaries and the people with testes.

You know who could end this? Doctors, because they know the truth. They go along with it to keep their jobs in the universities, which have all been captured by the ideology.

It's worth noting how wholeheartedly Trump embraced this and how effective he found it to be in populist campaigning.

Do Vet schools take the same approach?

It was said on another thread: If the Right had embraced identity politics, then the Left would have seen through the lack of science and attacked it.

This is all so weird

I wish doctors and biologists would step up and promote actual science. If this religious fervour hits scientists in a big way, it’s game over for rational thought. And probably humanity.

Grin I must admit to “misgendering” a litter of baby rabbits once... it lead to a lot more baby rabbits.

Organs are referred to by their actual names – penis, testes, vagina, ovaries, breasts. However, referring to patients as male or female is strictly taboo.

I am stunned... my mind is blown.
Who benefits from this?

There surely has to come a point where people point out the Emperor has no clothes.

This is going to work wonders for getting the diagnosis time for endometriosis down from 10 years or whatever it is.

Sex is relevant in almost all disease patterns, laboratory reference ranges, pharmacology etc etc, it does not only become relevant when it is a diseased ovary rather than a diseased testicle. It is like teaching medical students to diagnose a patient but refusing to tell them the patient’s age.
