Nicola Sturgeon says she is 'feminist to her fingertips'

Chris Deerin (New Statesman) 'asked Nicola Sturgeon about the Gender Reform Act and whether, given all the controversy that has followed, she wishes she had handled the issue differently.'

Sturgeon's answer includes:

...'one of the other misconceptions at the heart of this is that simplifying the process of gender recognition takes away the protections and the safeguards women have under the equalities act- for example, access to single sex spaces. That is not the case.'

one of the other misconceptions at the heart of this is that simplifying the process of gender recognition takes away the protections and the safeguards women have under the equalities act- for example, access to single sex spaces. That is not the case. We have been funding organisations to tell everyone they can take them away anyway. And have introduced a Hate Crime bill excluding sex so women can't complain about it.

There are times when, if you have to tell people something about yourself, it's because they'd never know it from their own knowledge or interaction with you.

(There are times when people choose to be oblivious to your competence and track record. However, it doesn't feel as if this is true of Sturgeon - her record of almost wilful oblivion to unintended consequences is striking.)

I'll say it again, those who govern us continue to piss down our backs and tell us it's raining.

Get tae fuck Nicola with yer pish, women will not submit.

Women won't wheesht.
Hopefully at some point the vast majority of people who see this pish for what it is will translate to losses at the ballot box. I live in hope.

My SNP candidate seems nice. She may even have sensible views on this subject.

I will not vote for a party with Sturgeon disingenuously selling women down the river like this.

It's the arrogance. Not even the dishonestly and condescension. It's the arrogance that gets me.

We can but hope. My non-SNP postal vote went in ages ago.

Does 'feminist to her fingertips' mean she just barely touches on it?

Over in Wales Jane Hutt (deputy minister) says the same thing, while refusing to meet GC women's groups and LGBA Cymru and sticking her fingers in her ears and talking about a building a feminist Wales.

The only reason self-id won't take away protections is because organisations have jumped ahead and ditched single-sex spaces already.

Probably something to do with nail polish.

In a world where anyone can say they are a woman, anyone can identify as anything, even Nicola Sturgeon.

Well if anyone wanted to identify as a woman hating mealie mouthed hole they would have a fabulous role model in wee Nippy.

midgedude · 03/05/2021 15:04

Well if that's the case perhaps she can take the time to explain how it doesn't affect women

Perhaps she has different ideas about what someone who has formal GRC is entitled to by way of sex based rights ... the rights of their sex or the rights of the sex associated with their identity?

Perhaps she thinks that a GRC holding trans woman is not supposed to use female facilities, female sport etc and in fact we are all worrying over nothing

She’s been “identifying” as a feminist for a good while now Hmm

Report
ArabellaScott · 03/05/2021 15:26

She thinks it doesn't affect women because the Scotgov say any male who thinks they are female is female. The Scotgov believes TWAW, according to that FOI.

Aye gibbons

And like most folk who choose to ‘identify’, they are doing the princely sum of sweet fuckall to actually be anything close to resembling what they choose to identify as.

Because like just saying it is enough to make it so, sure...

If it doesn’t affect women then surely they’d be happy for it to be discussed Hmm

Looks like ‘feminist’ is another thing you can ‘self identify’ as when you most definitely are not

@TommyBrock

I still don't know who the hell I'm voting for on Thursday.

You and me both. I have a list candidate. But not the 1st ballot. I don't want to spoil.
