Mumsnet says Trans Rights are Human Rights!

ool0n · 03/03/2021 14:39

I always assumed Mumsnet were not the biggest supporters of trans rights, given the stories about them. But this is a good statement on Twitter, "of course trans people exist, and of course trans rights are human rights"
twitter.com/MumsnetTowers/status/1367071394870276099

Also I thought using terms like cisgender or cis were against the rules, this isn't true either -

So can I get a trans rights are human rights, trans women are women, trans men are men and non binary people are valid!

And women's rights are human rights.

I have no problem with Trans Rights are Human Rights.
So are Women's though, sometimes they come onto conflict. When that happens we need to discuss it and work out solutions

I thought these MNTowers tweets are boringly reasonable and seem to reflect many people who post on this board.

Of course, trans rights are human rights.

And women's and children's rights are also human rights to repeat Errol's post.

Absolutely, trans rights are human rights- trans people are all human, and have human rights. I’ve never seen a user here say otherwise.

And trans rights are women’s rights, if those trans people have a need for women’s specific rights by virtue of having female bodies that perform the functions to which those rights pertain (eg pregnancy). I’ve never seen a user here say otherwise.

But you’ve lost me with the last sentence. What do you mean by “valid”, I’ve always been curious, can you enlighten me?

You have misread the tweet. They say they don't ban people for saying 'cis'. That doesn't mean they support use of the word 'cis' or that a post that used that term wouldn't be deleted if judged to be offensive.

I don't think anyone has ever argued that trans rights aren't human rights.

I personally find 'trans women are women' offensive because it only makes sense if you believe that people should be classed according to gender not sex, which enforces the oppressive concept of gender while removing the language required to protect women's rights.

Of course trans rights are human rights, why on earth wouldn't they be? Woman's rights are human rights as well. They are not the same.

Transmen are transmen, Transwomen are transwomen.

I don't get what you are trying to imply. Also please don't try and goad the board with TWAW because it doesn't wash on here.

They do say 'useful for clarity sometimes', but I wouldn't count that as a ringing endorsement.

I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick OP.

Trans people are human, therefore of course their rights are human rights.

As for the term ‘cis’. MN recognises some find it unnecessary or offensive so therefore to use it cautiously. Not sure who you think said it was a banned term?

I also despise the use of Cis. I find it offensive. We have a word to describe us and that is women we don't need any further descriptive.

Hello - just to be clear for any new posters - in terms of our Guidelines, TWAW is an entirely legitimate viewpoint and users are welcome to hold it and (if they wish) to make the arguments - think it's important to lay that out for anyone who's come over from Twitter (following MNHQ's offers to them) to see if we really do allow free and fair conversations about this.

For more about what we do and don't allow please check out our general Talk guidelines here and our specific guidelines on the trans, gender and sex issue here.

Thanks all

@BaronessWrongCrowd

I also despise the use of Cis. I find it offensive. We have a word to describe us and that is women we don't need any further descriptive.

There are 33,000 peer reviewed papers on Google Scholar that use the term "cisgender", people have reported being banned from here for using that term when it is endemic in all discussions of sex and gender in academia. Glad these are all mistakes or misreports, as how can you discussed evidence when a lot of it has a banned word in it?
twitter.com/notCursedE/status/1366718003224731649

Otherwise referring to people who are "not transgender" can get a bit difficult. Talking about cis men and women is a lot easier. Although I know some intersex advocacy groups prefer ipsogender rather than cisgender.

Just a continous thank you to mumsnet from me, you can argue they've been a bit heavy handed at times but they are walking a long tightrope and I have total respect for how they have weathered unfair criticism.

Yup, I agree. Some people find it very reassuring to believe that wine becomes the blood of Jesus. I don't agree personally, but I would never be so rude as to say someone else is wrong to believe it.

Lots of things are easier, but it doesn't make them any less offensive. I don't wish to be referred to as cis anything, since when did your right to "ease" trump my right to be referred to as I wish?
