Madonna wants to smash the patriarchy

Madonna put out a tweet yesterday:

The Patriarchy continues to try to crush my neck with their heavy boots, cut off my life force and take away my voice—Even those who call themselves artists..............You know who you are!!! DEATH TO THE PATRIARCHY! Now and Forever.

https://mobile.twitter.com/Madonna/status/1362934554647003137

My first thought was she has a new product/project out to promote and is doing it controversially (again) to generate as much conversation as possible. (Like this thread!)

My second thought was all the misogynistic comments by men just proves her point.

My main thought is that there's a lot of you're a rich privileged white woman, what do you have to complain about? Although there's no death threats or rape threats, it's a very similar attitude shown to JKR: white rich women have no business voicing their opinions. That their voices are invalid precisely because they are so privileged. There are a lot of comments along these lines from women too. From blue tick accounts too.

While I take what Madonna says with a pinch of salt, I am again reminded that women's voices are being silenced, from the very top "privileged" ones to the the very vulnerable.

Indeed. Some people love how "intersectionality" has given them a new way to shut up powerful women.

Madonna has the additional crime for a woman of being 'old' and someone who was deemed to be 'sexy' in her youth. And if there's one thing the misogynists really really hate, it's an older woman who people listen to.

Yeah! A ludicrously rich, independent woman they used to wank over has the temerity to get older... and still wants to be seen and heard.

Oh those poor insignificant, fragile egos!

Yes was going to say, don't forget to throw ageism into the mix. The patriarchy cannot bear aging women.

Report
WarOnWomen · 21/02/2021 11:16

Yes, ageism too. Once women get to a certain age we need to be invisible.

Madonna has had sexist crap all her career - actually probably all her life- she doesn’t give a shit what arsehole men have to say.

She’s also very good at self promotion and can reinvent herself over and over again. She’s incredibly successful, smart and has lasted in showbiz for decades.

She won’t take any notice of those who criticise her on Twitter but I doubt she’ll stick her neck out for anyone but herself.

Madonna's opinion on anything isn't worth tuppence. She is a an artist of very little musical or acting talent but a huge ability to promote Madonna.

Oh ha ha, she made her career out of how sexy and outrageous she is. Madonna made her money out of playing on sexist attitudes.

Has she ever, at any age, said anything worth listening to?

It doesn't matter if I personally agree with anything she has ever said, or if you do, or if any particular individual does, but it's undeniable that she is famous and powerful (in terms of reach and money).

You may not like her but she has been a huge influence in people's lives through her music.

Sadly I feel cynical about this because she has made a career out of getting her tits out. But then if we were all judged by the behaviour if our earlier selves....

In the case of Madonna I don't see why she should be exempt from criticism from making a career out of getting her tits out. She is at best a mediocre singer and dancer which she covered up by selling herself as this outrageous sexy creature. She peddled that for years.

From Twitter
Yes, you've taken incalculable risks in building a multibillion dollar empire via the repeated self-exploitation of your own sexuality

Just because it's a man or men criticising her doesn’t make them wrong and her right.
The criticism is entirely valid.

I couldn't care less about her music or her opinions.

It really doesn't matter.

What you see is a critique of a person that is wholly based on their sex.

Men, some of whom quite evidently used to find her sexy, use her age as a stick with which to beat her. Entirely ignoring the fact that they don't think that their opinions are equally aged. Some women too!

Sexy men, by social agreement, grow into sexy men with experience. Sexy women just get old and gobby, apparently also by social agreement.

More fool anyone who's life has been influenced by her. She's brilliant at marketing, I'll give her that. She probably has influenced equally talentless "musicians" into copying her ridiculous sex posturing.

But Madonna wittering on about smashing the Patriarchy is simply risible. Her whole act has been built on playing up to and taking advantage of sexist stereotypes.

Oh my heart bleeds. She built her career based on exploiting her sexuality.

She was always gobby , not that anything she was gobby about had any substance beyond promotion of Madonna.

Madonna "smashing" the Patriarchy.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/people/madonna-exposes-fan-s-breast-stage-brisbane-a6938291.html%3famp

She said this about a 17 year old fan

“She’s the kind of girl you just want to slap on the ass and pull…” before tugging on the woman’s top which came down, exposing her breast to the audience.

And no, it doesn't make it acceptable just because the 17 year old herself wasn't phased.

I was a huge fan in my teens and still a somewhat grudging admirer of her sheer graft and resilience, but I will never forget the moment in Truth or Dare when someone tells Madonna a member of her team has been drug raped and she laughs. I really don't doubt that she's has faced a lot of abuse and discrimination throughout her career but I'm pretty sure she's not that concerned about the patriarchy's boot on anyone's neck except Madonna's.

Indeed he would. When I saw the title of this thread I assumed it was written with a large dose of eye- rolling irony at how ridiculous the idea of Madonna smashing the patriarchy was.

I think Madonna claiming anyone's foot is on her neck is a little daft. Millionaires claiming oppression is probably particularly galling while the economy collapses.

It would be lovely if in her twilight years Madonna wants to do something to smash the patriarchy but saying it seems a little empty.

Report
SmokedDuck · 24/02/2021 04:18

I don't think Madonna gives two shits about the patriarchy if it's working in her favour.
