Barrister, women's right campaigner, mumsnetter @spero, and hero, Sarah Phillimore has been suspended from Twitter. Actor David Paisley and others are gloating about it.

I had to check, and her account is indeed suspended. I can see why the TRAs have gone after her. She’s gender critical, writes well and publicly and she’s a barrister.
You can read a few of her articles here:

Fuckers don't like intelligent, articulate women who won't fall in line.

Sarah also runs the “Child Protection Resource” website:

Welcome to Child Protection Resource

What is the purpose of the CPR?

The aim of this site is to help everyone who is involved in the child protection system, in whatever capacity by:

  • providing up to date information about relevant law and practice, and

  • contributing to the wider debate about the child protection system

Twitter is a vile cesspit. At this point in time, being suspended probably means you're speaking far too eloquently and using science to support your opinion, the horror. It's ridiculous though, and quite a scary step to be honest.

Earlier Mumsnet thread by Sarah about her legal case against police:

I have been recorded by my local police force as 'hateful'

I suspect that if there's one thing gets you targeted for a Twitter banning even faster than being GC, it's speaking out about child protection. Yet (curiously) MAP accounts seem to be teflon.

I suspect there are quite a few men in the upper echelons of the tech industry whose hard drives wouldn't stand close scrutiny. Not that they're ever going to be subject to scrutiny because... Tech industry - they'll know how to cover their traces.

I love Sarah's MN name, which I think is a reference to the phrase: "Dum spiro, @spero !" ("While I breathe, I hope"). Being thrown off Twitter is a violation, to be sure, but Twitter can't kill people, and the scandal of trying to silence child protection/ law/ reality is a truth bomb.

Let's take heart from seeing Glinner (Graham Linehan) in fantastic form since he was thrown off twitter. The messages Glinner and Sarah and others have for us will continue to spread because they make sense and are easy to understand, apply and repeat. These messages don't conflict with reality, so they spread easily.

I agree, it's the child protection expertise that makes her a target. We know this from our own history.

Oh, ffs, really?
I hope she carries on updating on here.
She had lodged a hate incident against the supreme court for being transphobic, iirc... surely not something trans supporters would disagree with?

You look at some of the tweets ppl on Twitter complained about and it's breathtakingly deceitful - they'll screenshot her tweet, then directly under it lie about what it said. With the initial tweet right there as proof it didn't say what they pretend it said.

I've seen it from the odd TRA on here, I didn't realise this was acceptable now?

Well done (if correct Smile). Hadn't figured that one out. GCSE Latin wasted. I guess, being a lawyer type, Sarah enjoys her Latin.

Knowing a bit of Latin's awesome - you get to see the derivations of the whole "posh" half of English that the Frenchies added on top of the Anglo-Saxon stuff.

From that phrase, "spiro" = breathe (once) leads directly to "respiro" = breathe (again/out), giving English "respire" and "respiration".

But more beautifully there is "inspiro" = "blow upon" which then also has the figuratively-derived meaning "excite, inflame", which is pretty much the only meaning in the English "inspire".

When you inspire someone, you're blowing on their flame. Like Sarah does.

(The English "spire" is unrelated - it's from a Germanic root. Sadly, there don't seem to be any English words derived from "spero" itself, but you see it in most Romantic languages, like French "espérer".)

Your post NecessaryScene1 is why I don't like the ide of English-language spelling reform. If spelling were modified to be phonetic many of the etymological associations would be lost.

Sarah's training and experience means she should be familiar with the legal terms nil desperandum and noli illegitimi carborundum.

Thank you for the support - yes, I chose 'spero' ages ago from the phrase 'spero melliora' which I thought meant 'I hope for better things' but apparently I got that Latin wrong!

It was always a question of 'when' not 'if' I got suspended as i clearly made a lot of people very angry. I am going to see that as a positive - what I am saying must have been worth something for them to go to all this effort.

I am sad to leave Twitter as its been part of my life for nine years now and it does have good reach and influence. BUT. it was becoming increasingly toxic and unhealthy and its not sensible to remain in an environment that has you dodging arbitrary and ludicrous rules. I should have jumped before I was pushed.

The real work, the direct work will continue away from social media. My application to the High Court is lodged, the College of Policing have 3 weeks to reply and I hope to get permission for a JR. Harry is proceeding in the Court of Appeal. Allison and Maya's cases are going forward.

The loss of a Twitter account won't affect any of this. Particularly not when Mumsnet exists - one of the main reasons if not THE reason I think that the UK stands more or less alone in organised and effective action against the cult of gender identity.

Sorry to quash that line of thought, but 'inspire' comes from spiro, not spero

I'll have a play in the etymological dictionary and thesaurus later to see if I can find any other, less negative, ones from spero
