Reimbursement of Childcare Costs in UC Ruled Unlawful & Discriminatory

Apologies for the DM link but it's the only one I found without a paywall.

A shero single mum instigated a judicial review against the DWP because under Universal Credit they will only pay childcare costs upon proof of payment.

The judge has ruled this unlawful and discriminatory to women, stating that they are adversely affected by it because 80% of those claiming childcare costs are women.

The judge agrees that it's unfair to make some of the lowest-paid workers have to find the money for childcare upfront, and is a serious barrier to them joining or advancing in the workforce. This apparently undermines the whole principle of UC which was supposed to support people back into work and make the transition into fulltime employment easier. Childcare costs should be able to be claimed on proof of liability not proof of payment.

Not known yet if the DWP will appeal the ruling or act to change their rules, hopefully the latter.

A fantastic victory for women, well done Ms Salvato!

This is such good news, makes total sense, once in debt the situation spirals and without a good credit rating it's hard to stay on track. A pathway to entrenching financial difficulties. Congratulations Nichola Salvato!!! Great work.
