BPAS to set up not for profit IVF Clinic

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service, which has been helping women terminate pregnancies for more than 50 years, has decided to set up its own fertility network to address the inequalities in IVF provision in England.

It plans to undercut private clinics and charge only the true cost of treatment, which it estimates will be between £3,000 and £3,500 each IVF cycle, not including drugs. There will be no expensive “add-ons” – such as embryo glue or “assisted hatching” – which patients often feel pressured into accepting at a very vulnerable time, despite many not being proved to work.

Women should be offered three cycles of IVF on the NHS, according to guidelines from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice), which recommends which drugs and treatments should be available on the NHS in England and Wales.

@EdgeOfACoin I will be having a freeze all cycle this month and we are being charged £5584 for the procedures and £2500 for the medication, we may need to buy more medication depending on how my body responds. The costs have gone up alot from when I last had a cycle in 2019, gonal f was around £300 for a 900iui pen back then, the same pen is £390 now, I have been prescribed 5 of them and may need to buy more. The clinic has also put the costs of the procedure up by 1k in just over a year. Seeing as it's a freeze all which is recommended if your 35+ as frozen cycles have higher success rates we will also need to pay another 2-3k for a frozen embryo transfer.

And then add to that transitioning for new borns for parents certain their baby was born the wrong "gender".

Actually basic treatment costs £3-4K before add ons like ICSI and drugs

So unless they are going to make the drugs free it won't be any cheaper than a lot of private clinics currently offer

I agree that this is no cheaper than the average costs I've seen and incurred myself at a private, London clinic! Most recently cycle (2 weeks ago!) was £3300 for IVF without drugs, so well within the 'undercut' price!!!!

Wow, those figures are insane! I'd had it in my head that IVF was around the £3K - £4K mark (although I'd heard you could get a reduction if you donated your eggs, which is a whole other minefield). I didn't know about all the add-ons.

Wow, those figures are insane! I'd had it in my head that IVF was around the £3K - £4K mark (although I'd heard you could get a reduction if you donated your eggs, which is a whole other minefield). I didn't know about all the add-ons.

The basic treatment is £3-4k but this excludes the following

• ICSI £1k - £1.5k
• Drugs can be anywhere from £1k to £2.5k
• scans/blood tests up to £1k per cycle
• extended culture to day 5 £500
• freezing of any spare embryos/or if you need a freeze all for medical reasons say £1k minimum
• frozen embryos transfer £1k to £3k depending on clinic
• other add ons ££££!

So you really need to factor in at least £7k minimum for a single round assuming it's straight forward (no additional medication/scans/freeze all etc)

Most clinics have interest free finance packages. And there are certain companies which offer refund packages if it doesn't

Cheaper to take out a bank loan - we took a loan for £13.5k over 5 years and that was £275/month

IVF IS affordable. People seem to forget that once a baby arrives they are going to need to either pay for childcare (over a £1k a month) or give up a wage to be a stay at home parent (£1k or more a month) - if you live like you already have a child for 12 months low and behold you'd have £12k+ in the bank - likely enough for just about 2 cycles
