Nothing much to say about this at the moment, except how fucking awful. I feel sick.

She's a "terrorist". For wanting equal rights.

Shocking yet not surprising. The very minor good news is that, with time served, she should be out in 2 months.

It's awful. During her captivity she has been repeatedly tortured.

Are amnesty doing anything useful or is she the wrong kind of woman seeking the wrong kind of rights?

Amnesty?

If she's relying on them she's in trouble. The only way they'd take an interest is if she declared herself trans.

I don't have much good to say about Amnesty's politics atm, but they have been calling for her release and they have previously criticised the sham trial. It is a case they've been raising awareness of.

Awful country. Heartbreaking and sickening what's happening to her. I hope she manages to survive until her release. Sad

But according to some the battle for womens rights is over now. Maybe someone can let her know. You know, when she gets out of jail ovbs.

@ChakaDakotaRegina

Are amnesty doing anything useful or is she the wrong kind of woman seeking the wrong kind of rights?

Amnesty International have made statements condeming her arrest, torture, trial and sentencing at several points. She was the subject of an International Secretariat urgent action campaign, along with Aziza al-Yousef when they were arrested.

The UK section has also condemned Loujain's treatment many times and organized a petition calling on the UK government to pressure Saudi Arabia to release the women.

Other sections have most likely taken other action too but I've only kept up with the UK's campaigns.

I saw this too. It's horrific.

I would like to know - and I'm not being facetious, I really want to know - what people who say that a) sex is "assigned" and b) that if you say you're the opposite sex then you are think about this.

If changing your sex happens upon your word, then is this woman simply stupid for not saying she's a man? If being a woman or man is based on how you feel, then her feeling of wanting to drive in Saudi would make her a Saudi man. Surely she should simply have recognised that she's actually a Saudi man?

If Joan of Arc was actually a trans man for being in the military at a time when women couldn't, then isn't Loujain also a man who could have avoided all this by recognising her true sex in the beginning?

I'm not hearing anything about her though from those people. Could that be because she's actually an actual woman? Hmm.

btw I know this sentence isn't about driving, but simpler for argument's sake.

I keep reading about this government's intention to cosy up to and establish even closer relationships with Saudi Arabia and the Middle East now we're out of the EU. Sickening.

Agree that it makes no sense for Amnesty to be saying 'biological sex doesn't exist' while simultaneously working to highlight cases that are entirely about the oppression of women as a sex class.
