Women's Rights in Preston - not hopeful atm

Responding, Coun Adair said: "It's not up for debate. Trans rights are human rights. Recently, Ofcom rapped the BBC for involving TERFs [trans-exclusionary radical feminists] in a debate about trans rights.

"You wouldn't debate a Nazi on antisemitism."

A rather unpleasant row has blown up in Preston, after one councillor 'liked' two tweets: 'I do not give permission to have the word woman appropriated'. and another referring to a twaw tweet.

The other councillor (quoted above) has equated people who defend women's rights with Nazis and lied about the Ofcom thing - I don't think she actually went as far as 'rapping the BBC' did she?

I am quite amazed that this newspaper happily quotes the outraged councillor with no apparent hesitation, labelling a large part of his constituency (?) as Nazis. Would the council leader usually be the person that this sort of behaviour was reported to? I think it is utterly outrageous.

This row has come a week to the day after the Preston Council voted unanimously to extend equality training among councillors on the subject of trans and non-binary awareness. They also voted to fly the transgender flag during Transgender Awareness Week next year (and every year I think)

I always read the trans rights are human rights and think , yeah, well of course

Why don't they say what they mean . Women's rights are men's rights

Exactly! No one is arguing that trans rights aren't human rights. Anyone who identifies as transgender should be able to live their lives free from violence, harassment or discrimination. No feminists, AFAIK, are campaigning for this.

But there are clear instances where the rights of (predominantly) trans women and biological women butt up against each other and the whole "NO DEBATE" approach is what's causing women to push back so hard.

All humans have human rights.

In the UK, various legislation specifically protects eg gender reassignment.

The rights that are talked about are the rights to be treated by everyone. Legally socially etc. As the gender (sex) identified with, on the word of the person, with no question.

That is not a human right.

Because it is silly. I can't even be bothered to say this that any more. It's silly.

If my DH is helping out with swimming classes (pre covid) he should not be allowed into the girls changing rooms where they get naked aged 6-adult. Obviously.

He should not be incarcerated in a women's prison.

He should not compete against women at sport.

It's silly. And that's that really.
Third space aok or work on men not being such arseholes which would help everyone.

Thank you, Councillor Rawling for supporting women's rights.

"Responding, veteran councillor of 17 years Coun Rawlinson told LancsLive he was adamant he had not liked "anti-trans tweets", saying the aforementioned posts were "pro-women tweets".

"I supported Councillor Jade Morgan's motion to Preston Council on the Gender Recognition Act but Councillor Adair likes to brand anyone who doesn't agree 100% with their views anti-trans or transphobic," Coun Rawlinson said.

"Yet they have blocked me online and won't debate it. Perhaps if they would like to explain what is anti-trans about the tweets I have liked, rather than simply regurgitate the same three trans rights slogans over and over we could make some progress?

"If the councillor is going to 'police' my Twitter feed for posts from feminists they are going to be very busy." "

I see the non binary Councillor Adair used to be in the Labour Party. And has a beard.

Amazing, I know this all has very serious implications and that these councillors have a lot of power locally, but that news article read like a high school row! Its depressing knowing these are the people who make decisions that directly affect people lives and yet they act like a bunch of 4th years. Councillor Rawlinson is right being pro women is not anti trans and the bullying campaign that is being set up on Twitter of all places is embarrassing and puerile.

Well done Cllr Rawlinson for not being cowed. Knows the issues, and instead of backtracking and acting dumb they’ve come out to defend women. How very refreshing!

Yes thank you Cllr Rawlinson for backing women.

He seems to know his stuff too, e.g. regarding murder rates.

Knowing your stuff is very important with this. If you know your stuff you are certain that the TRA slogans and tropes are pure guff, and that helps you stand your ground and be brave in the face of their bullying.

Councillor Phoenix Adair is a more than non binary, he is an androsexual demiguy. And a Lib Dem.

I'm amazed that a council, during covid chaos, can find the time to wang on about gender-woo.

(No I'm not.)

Good gracious, as if they don't have anything better to do at the end of 2020?

I agree with pp - this is all so silly. A waste of taxpayers' money, a ridiculous round robin of wokesters proving to each other that they really are true believers, honest.

I'm so tired of their foolishness. So, so tired.

Of course he's a Lib Dem.
Cllr Rawlinson sounds like a rare beast, someone who has actually looked thoroughly into this and drawn their own conclusions.

To think, once upon a time I was going to vote Lib Dem in the GE. Comparing women who stand up for sex based rights to nazis indeed, they can all bugger off now.

"Demiguy". This is getting beyond ridiculous now.

Which bits of Phoenix are male and which are "genderless", I wonder? What is the point up to which they identify as male?

Thanks for that newspaper link Imnobody4, it was very enlightening.

I enjoyed the new name choice "Phoenix Adair" instead of Daniel Gregg and particularly enjoyed the announcement “I wanted my name to reflect my non-binary status – if someone sees ‘Daniel’, they make judgements."

Having seen the accompanying photograph I think somebody should whisper in Phoenix's ear that the name "Phoenix" is not going to make a jot of difference to how people see them. Most people are only going to be more judgemental after being commanded to deny the evidence of their own eyes, and use to ungrammatical pronouns when referring to Phoenix in future.

Ah but he is forgetting, when there is no actual transphobia in such tweets, the tweets are then just referred to as 'transphobic dog whistles', as the transphobia is hidden so well most cannot see it, only enlightened MRAs! Grin

From the story about Adair’s transition:

^^“To them, I’d still be a man.”

That stark fact has been one the main motivations behind Cllr Adair’s decision to turn their attention to advocating for transgender and non-binary rights.^^

One of the main motivations was... getting their own way... got it. May have been just how it was written, but revealing nevertheless.
