the amount of women and teenagers freezing their faces, lobbing off nose cartilage and pumping fillers into their lips to the point of bursting has become normalised particularly amongst younger women. (I've observed that the pixie nose/big lip/sharp chin and jaw injections seems more common amongst white women for some reason. Butt injections and BBL surgery more common amongst black women and Brazilians.)

Women are flying to countries for surgery on the cheap and getting seriously ill or even dying.

I can't help but feeling like all of this is "wrong" and the girls are being misinformed but then I remind myself I enjoy fake lashes, bit of makeup, false nails occasionally etc. and I don't want to tar everybody with the same brush or be insensitive or hypocritical. I know that for some surgery can be a huge confidence booster and look very natural. This doesn't concern me so much. It's the trendy barbie, pixie look with tiny noses and unnaturally hourglass figures that I find unsettling. Also noticed a trend of teens going to Turkey to have their teeth shaved down to fine points for veneers to be applied. What's going on? Surely this is madness and mass body dysmorphia.

I imagine our generation will be known as the blurred distorted face era.

It has definitely got worse since I was young. So many girls wanting to look like a cross between a porn star and an anime character.

It's awful. It makes me so upset when I read about stories of women dying after having butt implants etc.

All I can say is I'm glad I am the age I am and all I can try and do, is instill a sense of self worth that does not depend on exterior looks, into my daughter. Social media is fucking toxic and an absolute scourge on society. And I include the easy access to porn in that.

Yes, it's very concerning.

I don't think it's ethical, medically, for health care workers to do this stuff. I know people think it falls under "I can do what I want with my own body" but medically most of this cosmetic stuff shouldn't be on the table.

I don't think you can easily stop people from getting cosmetic procedures done. I think there needs to be a stronger enforcement on practice so that less people come out "botched" as you put it (though I admit I'd struggle to find practical ways to do this) but I think people do have a right to alter their physical appearances to a certain degree.

Surgical procedure carry risks. It's a pity that so many people are prepared to take that risk, that they see their lives will be better for something that is basically superficial ( clearly not to them )

But i think the most disturbing thing about an overuse of fillers and surgery is that fact that beautiful individual women end up all looking the same

Dd is about to turn 19 and is naturally pretty in a standard beauty way, she has no interest in fillers and wears little makeup BUT she has a small nose, and good cheekbones and full lips so she is already ticking most of the boxes society says should be ticked

In another world she may well want to change herself radically to fulfill their beauty standards

I agree it's a mental/social disorder. The medical profession is culpable, they had to be stopped for advertising 2 for price of one procedures. It's heartbreaking. I'm not sure what is going on but there seems to be an addictive element, it has absolutely nothing to do with self actualisation.

When it comes to things like lip fillers you can see some women getting their first fillers and it looks fine, and then they are not happy and they get bigger and bigger

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer I was coming along to say the same thing. My cousin is very into cosmetic procedures (mid 20s) as are all her friends. In the most recent photo of a girls' night out the six of them looked so similar I couldn't pick her out! All had lip fillers, huge lashes, exaggerated contouring, botoxed foreheads, long straight hair (extensions?) and little black dresses. Must cost them a fortune!

I remember sitting on the train once and an extremely pretty natural looking girl got on a few stops after me. She proceeded to spend the next 45 minutes putting makeup on. She used numerous brushes and also seemed to repeat a lot of it. It takes me about 10 minutes to do my make up so I was fascinated! Sadly she didn't look anywhere near as good when she left the train as she did when she got on it. I really wanted to tell her that she didn't need to do all that but of course it wouldn't have been my place to do so. Just sad she couldn't see what I could.

I really wish this obsession with looks would go away. I frequently see women and girls looking like they’re made of plastic. I don’t do social media apart from MN so I’m baffled.

Yes, I have noticed this too about cosmetic surgery just getting more and more popular as it gets cheaper and cheaper. I did see an interesting documentary and many young men and women were saying that they were getting cosmetic surgery so that they could “look like their Instagram posts”. It turns out that the use of filters on the photos which makes these young people look like better versions of themselves then cause problems when they go on dates or meet up in real life because the real them doesn’t look like their filtered Instagram photos. So they then go get cosmetic surgery specifically to make them look like how they look with a filter because that is how they perceive themselves to truly be.

I agree completely. But I think Instagram has a glamour about it and it is very competitive in terms of rewarding conventional beauty with likes and followers.

The differences can be massive! And usually attractive people to start with!

Adverts don’t help, technology is so clever now that it touches up moving pictures as well so people look flawless

There was a TV ad campaign recently for - I think - Boo Hoo. 2 women in a ski resort. Their faces looked frightening. I actually thought they were drag queens when I first saw it.

I used to see youngish women with frozen shiny faces and pointy lips on the gym. Now I see young women all over the place with that look. I don’t think it looks pretty - but then I’m certain they aren’t doing nor for my benefit!

DH says they have a startled look of a goosed Barbie Doll.
