(82 Posts)Holy crap.
I suspect for religious purposes? I don't really know though. That is shocking.
What sort of clinics? Why? Is there any more context OP?
Wtaf?! Don't these questions usually get commissioned, who on earth is asking that?
Good god..
Why are men so afraid of womens sexuality anyway ...worried they might compare previous experience ? Worried they might actually expect to get something out of the sex rather than accept not enjoying it?
Just more excuse to violate womens bodies
Ugh yes I wondered the same when I saw it this morning, they're normally related to stuff in the news so I went in search of what it's about and couldn't find anything! I'm horrified by how many people have voted strongly support
BBC Newsbeat have been doing an investigation.

Those numbers are shocking.
Does it work for men and women?

It's poorly worded though. It says strongly support a BAN so people may vote wrongly!
That's a badly phrased question - it would be easy to miss the words "a ban" and respond the opposite way to your real views.
(/methodology nerd)
This is widespread in certain cultures. I am surprised it isn't more widely known.
Hmm. Do you reckon this examination would be done on the grounds of biological sex or gender identity?
I'm wondering how many people voted incorrectly because they misread the question. The wording is rubbish.

They're strongly supporting a ban on doing a virginity test, not strongly supporting the test itself. I want to know which group put this question forward so we can boost their work. I didn't know anywhere here offered that "service" and think there should be an outcry against it.
It’s mostly conservative religious families that ask for this before arranged marriages and the U.K. does have clinics providing this service. I think it should be banned. It’s a barbaric artefact that is more cultural in nature than truly religious. Too many women are born with no hymen and therefore would fail the virginity test which would then put them at risk for murder/violence.
How would it even work if a girl/woman needed an examination for actial medical reasons? They get some kind of " speculum not penis" stamp on a certificate?
I had no idea this went on. It's anti-women and the examinations are abusive.
I saw that a rapper takes his daughter to have her virginity checked annually. None of his business.
I studied religions for over forty years and never noticed even one claiming virginity had to be regularly checked.
I have heard of operations to 'repair' a broken hymen but that was decades ago.
What on earth.
How horrendous!
I'm more shocked at 25% agree.
Steezy

You are reading it the wrong way - 25% support a ban; a higher % opposes a ban
Using tampons can break the hymen anyway.
These tests are barbaric and should be out lawed.
I take it men would have any intrusive tests.
It should be banned but religious practices like this are too deeply embedded; if it was banned, it would be done in a non-clinical setting by non- qualified people, which would be even worse.
wouldnt I mean
It's a rubbish "test" anyway. Many girls "break" their hymen before being sexually active.
And that's a rubbish question that can be easily be misread, too.
Oh God.
The first I heard about this kind of 'service' was when the rapper T.I (American) was in the news for saying he accompanies his 18 year old daughter to her gynaecology appointments to make sure her hymen isn't broken According to the article, he laughed off his 15 year old son being sexually active though.
I had no idea it was happening here. Another tool to help strengthen men's control over women's bodies.
It is sexual assualt, pure and simple, and therefore criminal. Who is prosecuted for it though?
