Fiver a ticket, she's speaking to Zeinab Badawi and questions can only be contributed during the talk.

Oops sorry should have made that clear it's online and can be viewed for two days after the event if you book a ticket, I'm in and looking forward to hearing what they have to say.

No worries! I like the idea of several of us watching and listening together in our separate Zoom universes.

Yes! I've booked a ticket. Was late to the party on the Mrs America series, have just finished catching up. She's been disappointing of late, embracing the US liberal feminist take on identity superseding biology. Intrigued to see her speak nonetheless.

Well even more exciting on 2 December the British Library will interviewing Dolly Parton!

Just saying as they were advertising both these events as hosting "feminist icons"

Interesting compare:

Dolly Parton

  • massive reading project for young people
  • funds covid 19 vaccine
  • created many jobs for local people
  • sings well

    Gloria Steiname
  • provided mainstream media with a palatable form of feminism

    Wink

    Grin

I’m so booking Dolly next!

So far this is pretty good - I’m especially impressed that she’s not grand at all and is happy to answer the questions, some of which she must have addressed a thousand times before.

Gah still trying to get the kids to bed. Going to watch the play back!

She has just said that feminism should include anyone who identifies as female. Oh well.

Yes - that didn’t surprise me though, I’d heard her on the ‘How to Fail’ podcast saying the same.

I hadn't realised she took that view.
I submitted a question about conflating sex and gender which has (unsurprisingly) not been asked yet...

I agree wholeheartedly with the current comment on thanks though, especially when it comes to abortion rights. She has spent decades pushing for our rights for bodily autonomy.

Oh absolutely, 100% agree on that one

Yes, I agree on abortion. I just don't get it. How can you fight so hard for women's bodily autonomy and then deny biology. It's got to be US academic/liberal elite capture?!

I know! It really is bizarre.

I wondered whether readers might be interested in a thoroughly researched, very detailed paper about Steinem's long term involvement in promoting the bizarre conspiracies about "satanic ritual abuse" and dissociative identity disorder that have been such a significant causal factor in the Qanon and Pizzagate conspiracy theories? This is an excellent piece that should be of interest to rationalist / skeptical / cult aware feminists.

Professor Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi examines Gloria Steinem and a lesser examined aspect of life for her. As a member public intelligentsia for decades, Steinem has several parts of life less examined than others. Beit-Hallahmi takes a closer look at the aspect of Steinem’s life around feminism, the New Age, psychiatry, and Satanism.

Just including this for balance as many feminists seem blithely unaware of Steinem's involvement with people like the odious, dangerous quack Bennett Braun, her bizarre new age beliefs that rival Gwyneth's for sheer insanity and the fact that she has never apologised or made ammends for all the many lives destroyed as a result.

People's lives are being ruined today and democracies are undermined because of these beliefs and I wish that Steinem would step up to the plate and admit that she was wrong.

It is of great interest and concern to me that extremists within UK anti-abortion groups are promoting abortions as “satanic ritual abuse”. I have posted about this issue previously.

There is an excellent article with more information that is a must read for anyone concerned about women’s reproductive rights

Readers may be interested to know that one of the main promoters of the conspiracy theory that abortions are really satanic rituals in disguise, the odious Wilfred Wong, is currently in police custody in relation to the recent alleged abduction of an 8 year old child at knifepoint, alongside 5 other anti-satanic “activists”.

I understand that Wong is charged with kidnapping and possession of a bladed article. I would remind readers that, as this is a live criminal investigation, it would be legally problematic to speculate about Wong’s activities and those of his co-accused. I mention the alleged kidnapping for completeness.

Anyway, I just wanted readers to be aware that there exists a bizarre situation in which a prominent feminist, Gloria Steinem, is promoting anti-woman batshit conspiracies about menstruation, multiple selves and SRA that play into the hands of the far-right and anti-abortionists of the most vile extremes.

We live in interesting times.

Archival video demostrating terrible abuses against vulnerable women committed by Gloria Steinem's long time friend and associate Bennett Braun

I would invite readwers to watch this video and decide for themselves as to whether Braun is empowering women or infantilising and exploiting them

Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983:337) Steinem used to know what a woman was.

Same book as previous comment has a chapter on transsexualism (1983:206-210) from 1977 starting off discussing Renee Richards... And came to a well considered conclusion, "if the shoe didn't fit, must we change the foot?" What happened?!

Holy crap Socrates - thanks for this. I had no idea about the Bennett Braun stuff.

I think everyone, academics included, are entitled to adapt their ideas over time but I do think it’s interesting to read her thoughts from 1983 all the same. Am dismayed about the links to bizarre conspiracy theories, especially Qanon the damage that pops up everywhere like a multi-headed nightmare.
