Start using Mumsnet PremiumIcandy can't bring itself to mention women
(19 Posts)Today on Insta Icandy have an article about the surrogacy "journey" of its Md. The entire article manages to omit using the word woman once, interesting seeing as these mythical women make up the majority of its customers.
My favourite line here where they twist in circles to avoid using the W word.
Surrogacy is the process of working with a person either unknown to you, or previously known or indeed related, to carry a child on your behalf, with the understanding you will be their parents and the surrogate will relinquish parental rights.
I can't work out how to link it but I think the story is on FB too

The link
The really sad thing is that at some point women won’t actually be needed at all to grow a baby. It will either be a transplanted uterus or else babies grown in the equivalent of a greenhouse/poly tunnel.
What is iCandy?
I had to stop reading it.
Literally no mention of the mother, the woman, who had the twins. Quite disturbing to read it.
I can’t find it on Instagram or Facebook ?! :/
Christ on a bike! What a way to make it all seem so easy and clinical.. no other human being involved!
Aw, thanks for the link.
Icandy is a British pram brand. I actually have one lol
Sorry I'm actually not sure 're FB as I was searching to find an off Instagram link. On Insta it's one of their insta stories
Whilst I agree, and I have massive concerns about surrogacy, I must say this bit is one of the most realistic statements I’ve seen in a pro-surrogacy article!
“ It’s a horrible thing to start with but look at the costs involved with commercial surrogacy and think seriously if you can afford it. Commercial surrogacy in countries where its legal and you are offered the full protections and every part of the process is ethical and properly screened and legally covered is expensive, eye wateringly expensive. You have agency fees, egg donor fees, IVF fees, surrogate fees, medical fees, legal fees, travel accommodation etc. This means it is not available to everyone. The impact of this is it can lead to people looking for low cost options, which can involve countries which are not as regulated and therefore the process is not as safe, or local arrangements with friends which can sometimes cause numerous problems of their own.”
"Most importantly don’t feel under pressure, think of the research you do when you buy a car and double it, triple it, read as much as you can, and ask questions on forums and Facebook groups."
Did they really just compare surrogacy with buying a car? Yuck
ICandy is a pushchair brand. Very much a brand, it’s all about the colour scheme.
Sex is mentioned, the parents are a same sex couple. The impact of the pregnancy on the US woman isn’t considered at all, including in the decision to implant more than one; they have twins.
My fave quote “think of the research you do when you buy a car”
Woah......
The more I read of that that more my mouth was hanging open. And I was just thinking 'Christ, it sounds like he is talking about buying a house or a car' when I got to the bit where they compared it to buying a car!
They just completely neglected to mention that another entire human fucking being, a woman with feelings, emotions and agency, was involved in this process. Possibly more than one if it was a different egg donor.
How can this level of misogyny be celebrated as progress? I don't understaaaaaaaand!!!!
Transplanted uterus, polytunnel babies snort!
We are so far away from that whoever thinks this is possible is woefully uninformed.

Well...I suppose pregnant people and automobiles are both 'peolpe-carries', so I can see where they're coming from.
Though I'm not sure I'd like to be there.
Oops. 'people-carriers'.
"Lol", don't give them ideas, that sounds like a word they would happily adopt!
Wow twins. The risks that the surrogate mother took in her health to carry those babies for them.
Interesting they raised the point about wealth too. I wonder how wealthy the poor woman whose womb they rented is?
