If you're looking at vintage pieces do be aware that some people tend to stick the word "suffragette" onto anything that uses the colour scheme green and purple (looking at Ebay, for example). There were other green and purple things made that weren't necessarily suffragette related.

Violets were quite a popular flower for brooches, that includes ones made in the 1950s and 1960s. Pretty, but not suffragette. Actual suffragette stuff is rare, collectable and £££

I find it baffling that the suffragettes get so much attention, when it was actually the suffragists of the NUWSS (National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies) that did the legwork (decades before the suffragists appeared on the scene), and they also continued to press on with the issue of women's suffrage during the war years. The suffragettes abandoned the cause. Many historians now believe that the suffragettes did more harm than good, and more emphasis is being placed on the NUWSS, but the general public still only ever think of the suffragettes when it comes to women's suffrage. Both suffragists and suffragettes made contributions to the cause, but the peaceful suffragists have been forgotten by many. I just find it interesting that I am seeing the same thing on the feminist chat board.

I know I know, I have a bee in my bonnet about this subject. I can suggest some good books about it if anyone is interested.

Love to read more about them Tofu. Not prepared to write the Suffragettes off though, Emmeline Pankhurst's efforts travelling the length and breadth of the country rallying people to the cause made a huge difference, aside from the millitant activities.

There were many organisations and factions working together and sometimes separately. All need to be acknowledged.

I'm a little sceptical of modern claims that in fact it was the more peaceful and 'behind the scenes' women who had the most impact, rather than those who took on a direct and public role, challenging the parameters of what it meant to be a woman as well as campaigning for the vote - and, of course, provoking male violence in doing so.
