From Facebook, I guess he has picked a side.
51% of the population just don't count.

Probably going to regret this but surely you can support the trans community and women.

I believe that it is a small minority of people that are trying cause trouble not all trans people

nauticant Sat 21-Nov-20 09:55:52

It's from yesterday, the Trans Day of Remembrance. Parroting pre-scripted phrases in that context doesn't tell us much.

StillAFeminist Sat 21-Nov-20 10:02:06

Disappointing but not surprising

testing987654321 Sat 21-Nov-20 10:02:07

Trans rights are human rights.

I don't believe that should give anyone the right to override sex-based rights such as single-sex spaces where appropriate.

But the right to live free from abuse, have safe housing, a job, an education, healthcare, fair trials etc etc. All human rights that are also trans rights.

testing987654321 Sat 21-Nov-20 10:03:03

It also doesn't override my right to speak the truth.

persistentwoman Sat 21-Nov-20 10:06:51

It's a meaningless phrase parroted to support tdr yesterday. Of course he supports trans rights - he'll also state that he supports women's rights until the inevitable collision happens.

ErrolTheDragon Sat 21-Nov-20 10:08:09

It's just a thoughtless parrot-phrase, hopefully.
I'm not sure if he's considered that word 'fight'.
He may just be thinking 'fight for rights' (not sure what rights trans people lack at this point but leave that aside).
And have somehow missed that some of the activists are very much fighting against women and women's rights.

ShalomToYouJackie Sat 21-Nov-20 10:08:55

Ffs. Has anyone said that trans rights aren't human rights? What rights do trans people not have?

Floisme Sat 21-Nov-20 10:13:04

He's still keeping his cards close to his chest, as he always does. It was Trans Day of Remembrance and I can see nothing there to disagree with.

What I think is more interesting is that he could easily have gone further and added, 'TWAW / TMAM' but he chose not to.

BraveBananaBadge Sat 21-Nov-20 10:13:13

I’m guessing it’s a token to mark Trans Day of Remembrance. It says ‘trans rights are human rights’ which you can’t argue with. It’s a nice reassuring message, actually. Wonder if women had the courtesy of the same on IWD, or if everyone had to be included? 🤔

AnyFucker Sat 21-Nov-20 10:17:04

Lazy parroting of sound bites. Very disappointing.

Whatwouldscullydo Sat 21-Nov-20 10:18:43

Good luck with that one shalom

Healthcare is often cited as one. However im not sure how false sex markers on drs notes and shutting down/transphobia accusations towards anyone asking about risks/records etc are compatible with getting good health care.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair Sat 21-Nov-20 10:23:57

'Your fight is our fight too' is very inflammatory given that in reality much of that 'fight' involves a group of people threatening women and trying to block us from having single sex spaces. It's very poorly worded by someone who should be skilled at rhetoric. 'Trans rights are human rights,' while utterly meaningless, would have been a gesture of support without making anyone feel threatened.

I'm so disappointed. I like Starmer in many ways. I think he's fundamentally a decent human but I won't vote Labour now.

I am coming round to the view that he is a wet blanket.

gardenbird48 Sat 21-Nov-20 10:28:10

Did he manage to name any of the trans people being remembered on trans day of remembrance?

Seeing as 0 transgender people were murdered in the U.K. in 2020 and 0 transgender people in 2019 it might be tricky.
Or do they include the poor teenagers who may have died because they were taking unlicensed, unregulated drugs prescribed by certain suspended doctors in Spain?

Mummyoflittledragon Sat 21-Nov-20 10:28:56

Who the hell to vote for? Monster raving loony party perhaps?

Tanith Sat 21-Nov-20 10:30:19

It's word for word identical to all the other statements they put out yesterday: Angela Rayner's is even included in the screenshot.
I doubt either of them wrote that statement themselves.

Just a typical support parrot squawking on SM to keep the children amused.

DickKerrLadies Sat 21-Nov-20 10:39:20

Not just a sound bite, but a C&P sound bite.

endofthelinefinally Sat 21-Nov-20 10:40:38

Have any of them said anything about the 3 women a week murdered by men during lockdown?

tilder Sat 21-Nov-20 10:44:17

I have no problem with him saying that. As a statement, I would absolutely support it.

It would however be slightly naive of him not to be aware of the context in which the statement is often used.

Probably not. That's just background noise.

Yes. It is the fact that it is easy, and a cop out, to parrot this sort of thing without giving it a moment's thought, or doing any kind of research or listening to any of the women who are experiencing the removal of their human rights.
It is just lazy and ignorant.
Politicians really ought to make more effort IMO.

BrassicaRabbit Sat 21-Nov-20 10:50:55

I agree with his statement.

However until he shows leadership and finds a way forward supporting trans rights and women's rights I will continue to spoil my ballot.

Floisme Sat 21-Nov-20 10:56:39

Lord knows I have my issues with the Labour Party but this anodyne non-statement, made on a day of remembrance, barely registers. I think what it doesn't say speaks volumes and I imagine it's mightily pissed off the Twittersphere.

In fact it says so little it actually makes me feel slightly hopeful - although that's probably only because I'm in a good mood today.
