Christmas themed novel by black female anyone?

Hi all,

I've started a book club recently - its not a feminist focused book club, but obviously I would like to pick book choices on the lines of women's equality being assumed (hah hah hah - I now realise).

I'm just looking at our Christmas book and am finding it hard to find many recommendations where Dickens' Christmas Carol doesn't come in at number one...

As a group (which has men and women) we're keen to explore other experiences. I figured that a black female author writing about her christmas experience is pretty far away from Dickens.

Has anyone got any suggestions??

There is a black romance writer called Jasmine Guillory who wrote a Christmas-themed novel, but I don't think it's book club material! I'm struggling to come up with any Christmas books at all that I'd consider literary...

I think you're very much limiting yourself by making it Christmas-themed, whatever the race and sex of the author.

A Woman of Firsts, the autobiography of Edna Adan Ismail is on my list. But not Christmassy.

Gingerbread, by Helen Oyeyemi. It's not really christms-themed, but it is about gingerbread and it's also really wonderful!

I'm putting a Woman of Firsts and Singing and Swinging on my own list - but I think that Gingerbread might be the winner!

We do matching food as well so that will sort out the Christmas connection.

I hope you enjoy Gingerbread! I thought it was wonderful, clever, funny and strange. And definitely made me want to eat gingerbread so good call on the food connection!
