What do you make of this?

Personally I’m fine with this. Can’t wait for FB 3!

"Respectful dialogue is where change lives"

What? Editor please.

ErrolTheDragon Thu 24-Sep-20 09:55:21

Covering his butt so he doesn't get splinters from the fence he's sitting on?

Babdoc Thu 24-Sep-20 09:57:06

Respectful dialogue is rather difficult in the face of “no debate”, cancel culture, and rape and death threats, no?

Malahaha Thu 24-Sep-20 09:59:53

Schielding. Scared.

Stripesgalore Thu 24-Sep-20 10:01:20

I’m fine with it. He’s an actor; he doesn’t want to make a political statement. They are there to entertain.

@Xanthangum the word at the end is the verb to live not the plural of life (It took me two attempts to read it correctly too)

BentBastard Thu 24-Sep-20 10:02:32

It was a carefully crafted response designed to make it impossible to detect where he actually stands on the issue.

Which is fine IMO. Being an actor in a Fantastic Beasts film doesn't automatically make him qualified on the subject at hand.

FractionalGains Thu 24-Sep-20 10:03:59

As far as I’m concerned, this means he is likely relatively sympathetic with the gender critical position, to a certain degree. Anyone who is full on TWAW would say so.

poorbuthappy Thu 24-Sep-20 10:04:19

I prefer this response to the utter simpering bilge the younger ones came out with.

Same.

Vermeil Thu 24-Sep-20 10:08:18

Translation- ‘I don’t disagree with JKR, but I’m not touching that whole bin fire with a barge pole.’ 🤷‍♀️

Collidascope Thu 24-Sep-20 10:19:31

I think that's a fine answer. It's vague but he's right that listening to each other is important, and there is none of the irrational bilge that Watson, Radcliffe and Grint came out with.

IntermittentParps Thu 24-Sep-20 10:37:39

Translation- ‘I don’t disagree with JKR, but I’m not touching that whole bin fire with a barge pole.'

I've no idea where he stands on JKR but I do agree that he's not touching the discussion with a barge pole. Which I think is eminently sensible of him/the studio/the PR who coached him on that response.

wellbehavedwomen Thu 24-Sep-20 10:42:24

He's got a bloody good publicist, is my main feeling.

Lordamighty Thu 24-Sep-20 10:43:13

He staying neutral which is fine by me & better than trotting out the nonsense that the younger actors do. Let’s be honest though Jude Law knows exactly what a woman is.

Pluckedpencil Thu 24-Sep-20 10:48:25

In the current climate, this is frankly a positive endorsement of JK Rowling. He is basically saying, I am old enough and intelligent enough to understand that people don't share the same opinions, and the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. Which only goes to make me love him that little bit more.

Pluckedpencil Thu 24-Sep-20 10:50:56

And I think his last sentence was simply trying to express that "change lies in respect and dialogue".

Xanthangum Thu 24-Sep-20 10:52:38

@WaffleCash thanks. I can see now that he is saying 'where change abides' rather than some sort of typo-ed 'where you will change people's lives'.

Still makes no sense, IMHO...

highame Thu 24-Sep-20 11:04:12

I already hate the fact that 'entertainers' seem to think their views are just so fantastic. Good on Jude Law I wish the rest would follow suit.

Vermeil Thu 24-Sep-20 11:06:58

@IntermittentParps
He had the chance to go full Radcliffe, but didn’t. If he disagreed, he’d have said so for the woke points.

Ereshkigalangcleg Thu 24-Sep-20 11:09:17

I agree Vermeil.

Manderleyagain Thu 24-Sep-20 11:25:02

That response has my respect. He'd planned it before. There's no reason an actor has to have public opinions on difficult topics, and he is staying out of it without disowning jkr.

I agree it probably means he has some sympathy with her position, or at least sees where she's coming from because there is no loss incurred by saying something shallow that allows all the pink/white/blue social media accounts to say 'jude says trans rights'. 'jude says dialogue is where change lives' isn't going to do it for them.

Amen to this.

Me too. Especially Hollywood stars. What makes them any better informed than the rest of us? Fuxk all.
