(84 Posts)A legend. RIP. Can we kiss goodbye to abortion in the US now? Will we see further attacks on women's rights if the Republicans get to appoint a replacement? Scary times.
Oh God.
What an incredible, inspiring woman, what a legacy. Rest in power RBG.
For the US - scary times indeed.
RIP RBG
She was an amazing woman.
The Republicans will put a very young (30s) replacement in before the election. There will then be a 6/3 split in the court, and that will be the end of Roe v Wade. American feminism won’t be prepared to counter it because they have been so weakened with intersectionality, trans issues and other postmodern crap.
Oh shit. This is worrying for the future.
On a personal level, rest in power RBG
I don’t think Trump can get a replacement confirmed before the November 3 election, the process takes too long and I’m sure the Democrats will draw it out as long as possible! If Trump loses, his nominee is highly unlikely to be confirmed, don’t you think?
Poor RBG, she felt she had to hang on in there when she was desperately ill instead of enjoying the retirement she deserved. 💐
Rest now Ruth, you fought till the end. Women everywhere owe you so much xx
Genuinely sad and a true loss for the US for many reasons.
I know this should be about honoring her life, but all I can think about tonight is that we American Women are right and truly screwed.
American democracy died today. Trump now has the court he needs to fix the election in his favor.
She was such an icon.
McConnell has already said they're going to be getting a new SC judge confirmed before the election, despite him blocking the Obama administration from doing exactly the same thing in 2016.
This is a disaster for women and for US SC decisions for decades to come.
I hate McConnell more than trump.
Why do vile people like him and Barr never get cancer?
My American friends are all devastated. I’m so scared for them right now.

Don’t underestimate how important abortion is in the US to feminists. They will fight.
They have to hold the Senate hearings and the Senate’s going on recess for three weeks from mid-October. Let’s see what happens.🤞
Awful news, wish she'd lived longer, she was still working, such a powerful leader of our generation.
Mitt Romney and Lisa Mukowski both Republicans reportedly have said they will not vote for a new nominee until after the election and a couple of others have said they won't either in the last few months
🤞
What an incredible woman she was. I was watching CNN when the news broke, they have covered no other news since. That's how important she was and is. Erin Burnett was visibly shaken.
A towering figure. What a legacy she leaves. I hope it is more secure than I fear.
By the way, did anyone note this from the Guardian? "Her secretary persuaded her to use the word “gender” rather than the word “sex” as she felt it was less confusing to middle-aged male judges."
I'm absolutely devastated. She was an icon. I pray Biden wins the presidency in November.
I'm so scared that women, gay, minority rights- basically anyone who isn't a white man- are going to be screwed if Trump is allowed another Supreme Court nominee.
I'm just gutted over her death.

Yes, we are. It's just fucking heartbreaking.
I wrote this on the other thread:
This is very, very, very bad news.
The Republicans are certainly going to put a justice through before the new senate/presidential term starts. (This is despite blocking a nominee in 2016, when Justice Antonin Scalia died 256 days out from the election. At that time, the senate leader said it was too close to the election. He has made it clear that he is a sheer hypocrite and will push someone through with 50 days to go.)
That means the court will shift very far right. And that's it for a generation. I'm not exaggerating.
If there is any contestation about the election, they will toss the ballots and put Trump in power.
There goes abortion access, gun control, healthcare, and keeping money out of elections. For 30 years.
It's overwhelmingly bad.
On a personal note, she was an amazing woman and an inspiration. That it happened on Rosh Hashanah is such a cruel irony. What a way to begin a new year. May her memory be a blessing.
I live in the US. My daughter called me from college and said "I hate to ruin your night but ..." ( we were watching Endeavour at the time). I couldn't be more depressed.
This is disasterous for us here in the US. Just awful. And while I admire and applaud everything RBJ did and achieved in her life I will never forgive her for not retiring in the first month of Obama's second term (she was 82 then I think). That to me was unforgiveable. Look at what Justice Kennedy did - strategically retiring having secured the nod to his fucking awful protege Kavanaugh. I wish the democrats were as strategic about the supreme court as the republicans are.
The only person who is as worried as me and my ilk is probably Chief Justice Roberts - who realises that a heavily conservative weighted Roberts Court is going to go down in history for some serious shit.
It's going to be desperate if she is replaced as the Republicans intend.
