^Canadian footballer Rebecca Quinn has come out as transgender in a powerful social media post where they stressed the importance of representation and allyship.

Quinn has played for the national women's team since 2014, making their debut aged 18 before playing at a home World Cup in 2015 and winning bronze at the Rio Olympics four years ^

What does transgender mean in this context?

I know nothing but the reports, all written in Newspeak and I guess based on the press release.

I guess she is a transwoman but more news should follow

Is she biologically female, but a trans man? If so, why are they still playing for woman's team? Can't have it all ways.

I believe they are a trans man, if they aren't then she passes extremely extremely well.

If he is a trans men then this is extremely positive as they are playing in the correct league to their biological sex and shows inclusion can work this way. Double they will want to switch to the mans league and essentially never compete again at international level.

I'm guessing from the "They" pronouns that Quinn identifies as non-binary. Which is fine - bit like being a Protestant who plays football, or a Labour Party member who plays football, or a trainspotter who plays football. Each to their own.

So long as Quinn does not have either (a) the physiological advantage conferred by having gone through a male puberty or (b) the advantage conferred by illegally doping using testosterone, what Quinn believes is Quinn's own business. If however, (a) or (b) apply then Quinn should not be playing women's sport.

Pretty sure Quinn is biologically female. That is how I read the photo on the 'coming out' post anyway. Interesting how the article doesn't actually mention it though. And the comments on the instagram post show that many people aren't clear either.

No problem with Quinn playing for the woman's team.. that is the correct place to be playing.

It is transphobic to ask

They look biologically female, but are too special to just be a girl.

I agree with Louhotel

I agree with Grellbunt who agrees with Louhotel.

Those that shout T* (mainly men) forget that we exclude men irrespective of how they identify based on sex, not gender reassignment/identity.

I assume doping rules remain.

I doubt this person wants the beard, voice and extra muscle mass testosterone would bring. They seem content to keep their body unaltered and simply 'come out'. Perhaps playing football at that level feels too masculine to match their internalised beliefs about gender. Perhaps they're managing their inner awareness of same-sex attraction by manipulating their gender to match internalised homophobia? Who knows? Why tell us?!

I do wonder about the appeal for everyone to become an 'ally' and check their assumptions, though. What possible good could come from looking at every stranger you meet and wondering whether your first impression of their sex is right? Do we want to be scoping out strangers' groins and musing privately on what tackle is hidden in their underwear, or scrutinising their boobs to decide whether they're real or fake? Trying to catch a neck profile to decide whether there's a visible Adam's apple or not? I don't! Being asked to be a bit pervy and hyperaware of other people's bodies just doesn't sit well with me. I'm much more interested in people's minds and what they have to say than in their anatomies.

That’s very clearly a female.

“If youre not sure what cis means, that’s probably you!!!”

Hmm

I don’t think that’s what makes someone cis Rebecca. Perhaps you need to do some more reading.

So they are a trans man but play for the women's team.......because presumably there would be no way they would get on the mens national team......because ..........sex, proving exactly why women's sports needs protecting

Agree! I suppose nobody really minds what a person calls themselves as long as they, like the rest of us, respect the boundaries of others. In sport, sex is the critical component, not identity.

So if Rebacca is not a woman, why does she want to play womens football?

Quinn finished their post by listing some thoughts on how others can be allies for the trans community: "One, put your pronouns in your bio. Two, follow/ listen to other trans/non-binary voices. Three practice using gender neutral pronouns with friends/ in a mirror. Four, vote. Five, start to catch yourself making assumptions about people in public/ bathrooms/ any space."

So all coming out as trans seems to mean for Quinn is a bunch of dip shit rules for everyone else.

Ludicrous.

Yes on the face of it positive, proving that it is perfectly possible to be trans and play on the correct team for your sex, because obviously sport is segregated by different sexed bodies and not by different personalities, ideologies or feelings.

But reading the article I see they are pushing extreme trans ideology, to the extent that they are misogynist (check your assumptions about who is in your bathroom etc). There are plenty of trans people who aren't misogynist but my gosh the media doesn't like to give them a voice!

So the grumpy side of me wonders why this individual gets to have their cake and eat it? If they push an ideology that makes it difficult for me, a woman with PTSD, to be ensured of a female medical practitioner, by their own logic they should be forced to try out for men's teams only.

They'd also be banned for doping so, you know, career first! Which is fair enough.

So non story really. Biological woman plays for women's team. Doesn't take T because not interested in changing body, or doesn't want a ban from playing.

Who would we be using the gender neutral pronouns to in the mirror? Confused ourselves? Or are we to pretend it’s someone else? So we’ve all to use gender neutral pronouns for everyone to accommodate the 1% of people who actually want it?

Ok - so are they now going to try out for the men’s team?
