Now aplplying to take his case to the ECHR having been refused leave for it to be held in the UK courts (because of early procedural errors as I understand it )

For the gardeners amongst us, there is a hole to fill(Crowd Justice)

Is this the researcher Who had his research On detransition cancelled by administration after it was to be funded for being “controversial”?

Report
Imnobody4 · 09/09/2020 18:02

I really admire his tenacity. He's been the victim of a lot of legal game playing.

I wish him luck.

You can't go hiding facts and science from the world because people don't like them.

Facts exist regardless

If we leave the EU with no deal, will the ECHR still have influence here?

Report
PaleBlueMoonlight · 10/09/2020 08:51

ECHR is completely separate from the EU.

Honestly I could vent all day about the men’s sexual entitlement activists hijacking gender theory and using it for bullying and authoritarian silencing.

The TRA lobby should be saying ‘we support research so we know what we are advocating for is right and helps people’. Of course they don’t because it’s actually not about the needs of trans people at all. If it were, research to help detransitioned people like Caspian proposes to do, would be massively supported. And many other people would support the need to do that research too. So it’s an interesting little insight into a men’s sexual entitlement campaign to see how they don’t call for research because that might not match up with their advocacy.

I could also vent all day about how the university sector has become marketised into submission and how OF COURSE free speech, unpalatable speech, unfashionable research, challenging research all fall by the wayside when universities work within a consumer culture and are starved of core funds from the public purse. The TRAS who intimidate universities from doing research, including from among their own students are reprehensible- but Bath Spa should be ashamed of themselves, Universities UK (their representative trade body) should be ashamed of themselves and most importantly government should be held to account. Gavin Williamson and Boris Johnson are responsible for this. We need universities to generate and test out ideas. If anyone ever doubted that then COVID shows it. We can’t leave that all stuff to the market. We need an educated workforce. We need expertise. We need experts who can work for the public good not for commercial advantage. We need education for its own sake as a public good. And guess- what we do have to pay for it. Like anything in life- good journalism, food, we have to be prepared to pay for universities to exist. Ideas are a product the people create and test in higher education. Universities serve a key public purpose of providing an education and developing expertise among students and academics.

What happened to this government initiative of 2019 then?

James Caspian

Sept. 9, 2020

We are going to the European Court of Human Rights!
A huge thank you to all of you who have supported this case so far.

My lawyers have applied to European Court of Human Rights, since the Court of Appeal refused, on technical grounds, to grant a hearing for my case against Bath Spa University for preventing my research into gender detransition.

Since this case began in 2017 there has been a huge acceleration in the numbers of people reversing and regretting their gender transitions. Dr Miro Djordjevic, the surgeon who suggested that I research detransitioners as long ago as 2014, reported in a documentary last year a tenfold increase over five years of patients asking him to do 'reverse' surgery, and has published a paper asking for research to be done. Meanwhile, academics who talk about detransition, and consider researching it, are vilified and persecuted as 'transphobes', and risk their careers and livelihoods.

This is not only wrong, but unethical. I still believe that the courts are the best place to have established the right to research what has become a controversial topic, and to make a precedent to protect free speech and democratic principles. That is why this case is so important. Please continue to help by pledging and sending the link out on social media - Twitter, Facebook etc.

I was just wondering about this case the other day. It's ridiculous to restrict academic freedom because of the noise being made by special interest groups. As pp said, facts exist regardless.

" I became aware that there appear to be a growing number of people who have sought to reverse the surgery they had as part of a gender transition. As part of a self funded Masters degree at Bath Spa University I applied for permission to research this group to find out more. Gender Reassignment Surgery includes surgery to the genitals, and for women changing to male, often removal of the breasts. I wanted to talk to the people who regretted their GRS and then had surgery to try to reverse the original surgery. There is no research into this phenomenon, and it is needed to develop insight into why this is happening and to learn from these peoples’ experiences"

reported ... a tenfold increase over five years of patients asking him to do 'reverse' surgery

This research must happen to understand why, to get evidence, to get to the truth, to stop anyone else going through reverse surgery. The current situation doesn't help anyone including the trans community.
