Netflix Twitter account and the wokewagon

I understand why businesses want to jump on the latest wokewagon, but surely there are trans people who are interested in film and television and are adult enough not to have Twitter threads full of misogyny, porn and inappropriate sexual fantasies? What organisation wants to be associated with people like this?

I find this while thing so depressing - we’ve given serious issues about inclusion over to porn-soaked, adolescent-minded nincompoops.

And all in the pursuit of profit by corporations.

I just saw a clip of the Netflix new Babysitters' Club. A "transgirl" was shown in hospital. The scriptwriters carefully let us know that they are "really" a girl by having them flinch in horror at the thought of having to wear a blue medical gown. Afterward, the "transgirl"'s annoying little friend gives the doctors a lecture about respecting transgirl's identity etc. etc.

It was all pretty nauseating.

And then I learned that the child actor playing the "transgirl" is none other than Kai Shappley---the one whose homophobic mother used to try and "beat the gay" out of him, before finally deciding that his tastes were acceptable as long as he could be turned into a heterosexual girl

And then it felt really really nauseating.

By the way, the Netflix is owned by the company producing Lupron thing is rubbish - an investment fund called Capital Research Global Investors owns stock in both Netflix and Abbott Laboratories who is said to produce lupron (I haven't checked if this is true or not).

CRGI owns stock in lots of other companies - microsoft, Amazon, etc etc. It is an independent fund owning shares in companies, it is not Abbot Industries having a stake in Netflix. The same fund just happens to have bought shares in both which is quite normal.

The article is fab though - I really liked this paragraph:
It's easier and much cheaper to demand your employees click through a diversity and unconscious bias training website once a year than to set aside money for higher starting salaries, or junior training, which would go a long way in rectifying the diversity problem as the potential employee pool that could afford to take the job would be greater. It's cheaper for a company to send some C-level employees to a bunch of seminars about women in advertising than it is to set aside money for a daycare service and longer parental leave which would likely keep more women in advertising. It's really cheap to change your company logo to a rainbow flag on all social media, and companies didn't object to hiring openly gay people as their salaries are just the same as straight people's.

Netflix’s twitter account had another trailer for that series, showing the mother beaming over the child showing the older one a drawer full of sparkly pink clothes and wearing head to toe pink sparkly clothes because that’s how to show the world they are a girl. Oh, and doing a plié - because boys can’t do them in other clothes, presumably.

The Netflix statements about the episodes on the Twitter account are something again, as are some the responses.

Netflix is notoriously hands off with development of shows, so I would be skeptical of them actively 'pushing' any narrative.

But getting an adult who posts freely online about their fetishes to promote a children's program is beyond inappropriate.

They own about 9% of Netflix, 7% of Abbot Industries. Major holdings for sure, which will give them some influence on corporate strategy. But not at the level of choosing what programmes to commission.

Interesting @CourtneyLurve that's not my experience - but could be different genres more hands on/off than others? They will have approved the storyline, script and actors surely? And the marketing team should be ashamed of themselves for choosing such an inappropriate person for a kids series.

Yes @petherbridge the fund will have some influence but highly unlikely on programming as you say. Who knows what the fund thinks about this issue. I'm guessing they may not think anything as Abbott does a lot more than lupron. Was just correcting the idea that Netflix is owned by Abbott which isn't true.

Funny thing is - if my mum had tried to get me into the clothes that this child wears WW3 would have broken out.

Also amusing that doctors are supposed to be psychologists now. We used to tell people ‘my son can wear a Frozen dress if he chooses - aren’t we progressive parents!’ So what’s a doc to do? Shame the programme doesn’t seem to explain that in a medical setting correctly sexing a patient can be a matter of life and death - once out of the pink frills and in a unisex gown it doesn’t matter how you feel.
