Not sure whether it is okay to post her message which is being widely shared on facebook.

She has chosen not to name the Rabbi who had invited her and had discussed her contribution which would be based on her experience of not only being Jewish, but Black and a Lesbian (and feminist?!).

Its not even clear if the complainant was a trans person or just some woke individual who thought they had the right to try and silence the voices of (yet another) woman.

The only thing is, I think the more of this shit they pull, the more people get engaged. Ha that was supposed to be enraged but enraged hopefully leads to engagement anyway.

It's on an open facebook page that anyone can look at, so I think it's ok to link to it.

Isn't this direct discrimination based on sexual orientation?

I dont understand how you can buy into Abrahamic religions as a feminist. The idea that if there is a god it's male is ludicrous to me, I mean god is not going to be an animal is it.
Anyway Linda is awesome and I bet who ever is behind this is male.

Two years old but a nice article by one of the DMs more right wing columnists about admiring Bellos despite not sharing her views.

No platforming is not the way to resolve political differences.

I don’t think (just my understanding) that God as male is an idea that is so much scriptural as much as it is grammatical and traditional. One for the translators to bicker about.

Having said that, I’m not from a denomination that celebrates misogyny and I can imagine a feminist cradle catholic feeling differently.

Another example of cancel culture.

No-platformed due to one's opinions being 'the wrong' opinions.

How can they have a discussion anyway if everyone agrees with each other? Is that what a discussion is now, everyone sitting around nodding in agreement with the party line?

That's really sad. She's a remarkable woman, with decades of work on race, sexuality and sex to her credit. I don't share her politics, but she's sincere and courageous.

What is this derail about religion?

Linda is part Jewish. If the Nazi came back or some equivilent she would be a target of the anti semitism.

It's irrelevant whether she subscribes to Judaism!!!!!!!!!!!!

She has grown up experiencing racism, anti semitism, misogyny, homophobia, ...

And yet some individual has created such a hostile environment that a Rabbi who thought her life experience would beinteresting to young people has been intimidating into disinviting her.

So I would say this is an act of racism, anti semitism, misogyny, homophobia just because she believes that a woman is a biolgoical female.

I cant understand these comments. It has FA to do with religion.

Abrahamic religions are referred to as patriarchal religions, they are the cradle of the patriarchy. My point is that expecting them to behave in any other way is optimistic at best, and that is not a derail.

Whatever Zoom call they were planning will be very much poorer as a result of her absence. People need to learn how to say "no" when someone tries woke extortion via crybullying.

I'm a Reform Jew and we have a pretty good record on sex equality (we also have a chief rabbi - soon to be replaced - who has drunk the trans kool-aid, but hey...)

And yet the only Jewish organisations likely to invite a black, lesbian Jew are the Reform and Liberal organisations that have rejected the patriarchalism of Judaism, that are determined to men and women equally.

Unfortunately Liberal Judaism in particular has taken 'love thy neighbour' to Christian turn-the-other cheek extremes, ie love thy neighbour even if it harms you, love thy neighbour at number 28 even if it harms thy neighbour at number 24.

What happened to good old Jewish "do as you would be done by"? In other words, treat each other with respect (rather than turning yourself into a doormat).

Hmmm yes, but do you have a female God, or even a non-binary one Wink
Report
PikesPeaked · 19/07/2020 21:31

Non-binary, actually.

Judaism recognises that God has feminine attributes (the Shekhina) as well as masculine and neutral attributes. It is only the patriarchal control aspects of organised/tribal religion that present God as male. The concept of Goddess scares men, because it reminds them of the things that women can do but men cannot.

I am neither black, nor Jewish, nor a lesbian, but I am a woman, and as such, I stand shoulder to shoulder with my sister Linda Bellos.

Wow!!! 350 Shares !! Shock

In case anyone still cannot see Linda's post (it's bloody infuriating to read what happened, mind!):

"I have just been disinvited to speak to a Jewish Zoom meeting particularly about being a Black Jewish woman. It was known before I was invited to speak that I am also a lesbian. I am told that this disinvitation arose after a Trans person or someone speaking on behalf of Trans people approached the Rabbi pointing out my criticism of the new Trans politics.

Being critical of the new Trans politics - which reinforces gender stereotypes - is to me as necessary as my criticism of the notion of races. Gender and Race are both man-made notions which uphold superiority and power and are held up to justify the subjugation of women and Black people, among others. I remain critical of racism and no amount of threats will change my mind. And I have had in my time had many racist threats. I have no idea whether the ‘advice’ to the Rabbi came from a Jewish person or not, but frankly that is not the

Apparently my criticism of the politics of Trans means that I should not have a ‘platform’ to speak about any matter. In my nearly 60 years of activism such a thing has never happened to me before, being ‘cancelled’ as being a Black person, a Jewish person and a Lesbian. Of course, this is not happening to me alone, many other feminists have been threatened and silenced especially if they are lesbians.

I have not asked the Rabbi whether the ‘advice’ given to her came from a White Trans person or a Black one, but I rather doubt that they were Black because they would know how hard it is for Black people to be heard in a White society. Besides which my conversation was about dealing with racism. But apparently a Trans person or group had decided that their concerns are more important than this.

I was initially hurt by the disinvitation from the Rabbi with whom I had a long series of communications beforehand and I have given myself several days to think upon the matter. I don’t blame her, she is one of thousands of people who are confused by the new Trans politics. What I now feel is a disgust that a Trans person has sought to deny me the opportunity of giving advice to a Black Jewish young person about dealing with matters entirely unconnected with Trans politics. That is not only arrogant and insensitive it is also racist. Yet again a person who was until recently a man is telling other people what they can and can’t do. So now this Black person is not able to share my experience of dealing with racism on the say so of this person who now identifies as a woman.

I was asked to speak as a Black Jewish woman. I have been disinvited because someone in the name of Trans has accused me of Transphobia . If I should find out the name of the Trans person, or their representative, who is responsible for my disinvitation I should do nothing to them except perhaps ask whether they know how the Nazi’s destroyed freedom of speech."

That last line bears repeating!

"If I should find out the name of the Trans person, or their representative, who is responsible for my disinvitation I should do nothing to them except perhaps ask whether they know how the Nazi’s destroyed freedom of speech."
