Buffy's getting cancelled?

Apparently Joss Whedon has liked J.K.Rowling's tweets.

Lol do the twitter kids even know who Buffy is? One of my favourite shows, hope it has a revival.

More likely they'll whine about Firefly.

They've recently started Buffy from the beginning on telly. Just make me feel bloody old now.

Ha ha. What a load of twats. I'm almost praying for the demise of Twitter these days.

No one can cancel Buffy. She’s way too tough.

TRAs are nothing compared to a motherfucking hell mouth 🤣

Yes!Yes!Yes! Dd18 adores Whedon and Buffy. She shouts at me if I say I support JK’s view and denounces me as a transphobic and a dinosaur. So glad he’s in her corner.

Good for Joss Whedon though! (Off to find him on Twitter - check he doesn't retract like Mark Hamill did Grin )

Buffy is from the 90s so I imagine they will trawl through it, find something that would now be considered racist or homophobic, and scream for its cancellation while demanding (and probably getting) grovelling apology videos from cast and crew. Without once thinking that if something was created almost thirty years ago it probably doesn't make much sense to judge it against the moral & ideological standards of the modern day twitter mob.

I love Buffy, obviously. But lest everyone gets very excited about another bloke doing the bare minimum and then disappointing women, let's please remember that Whedon is a fairly disappointing man to begin with, aside from his creative output.

Not doing purity spiral stuff, and I don't believe 'cancelling' people is anything other than neo religious obsession, but I've been at this too long to get excited about a bloke supporting women. They always turn out to have feet of clay, and Joss Whedon is already in that group already with his behaviour towards women.

Twitter would seem to support that, Flora.

Men can be rather disappointing in general, NAMALT etcetcetc.

I agree that Whedon himself is a questionable individual and his self-professed feminist credentials don’t stand up to close scrutiny. But what’s interesting to me about this is whether there’ll be a campaign to ‘eradicate’ Buffy in the same way there was with Harry Potter.

I see a few parallels: they’re both ‘chosen one’ narratives wherein the lead protagonist is forced onto the edges of society by their ‘special’ status, but draws strength from building a support network of similarly ‘outsider’ friends and goes on to save the world.

I’d imagine it speaks to non-conforming persons in much the same way as HP did, so I’d guess the suggestion that Buffy was possibly a t*rf might cause similar histrionic weeping and wailing.

I’ll be watching with interest. Smile

Love him so much
From his wikipage

In college, Whedon studied a theory called "womb envy",[239] a concept he says observes "a fundamental thing that women have something men don't, the obvious being an ability to bear children. Men not only don't get what's important about what women are capable of, but in fact they fear it, and envy it, and want to throw stones at it, because it's the thing they can't have."

He is also involved in the Marvel universe so good luck with trying to cancel that!

Well that's extreme trans-activism in a nutshell.

The males who want to be us, (some of them) treat women like they're commodities, like our body parts should be up for grabs by anyone.

Never mind that women can suffer so very much from being born with a female body, and that the one thing all women have in common is the experience of going through life with a female body.

FYI: it was announced last year there was a Buffy reboot in the works with a 'richly diverse' cast (specifically a black Slayer).

Also: stories like this, about how he treats people in real life, while people are getting outraged by his liking of tweets - says it all.

I don't know why we're even asking if Whedon or his body of work will face any significant backlash of a similar kind to JKR.

I mean, maybe some of you are new to this, but the answer will always be "Does he have a penis? Then no. He will not face anything except a few beardos saying they are disappointed in him."

@BigBadVoodooHat But what’s interesting to me about this is whether there’ll be a campaign to ‘eradicate’ Buffy in the same way there was with Harry Potter. Male creator, so my guess is no.

(Although agree with all your points on the similarities between the universes! And there's a bit in Buffy where Riley actually says he's a lesbian, which could be now either read as 'hate speech'/'literal violence' or evidence that actually Riley was trans.)

I tuned out every word ultra-bore Riley ever uttered so I missed that! Grin

Though I have just remembered that apparently Whedon was accused of homophobia for killing off Tara, so I’d guess that’ll be dragged up again as evidence of his inherent ‘bigotry’.
