Glen Greenwald writing about Martina Navratilova and "cancel culture"

This started off pretty interesting and readable, and his personal admiration of Martina was nice to read about, but then I got to the part where he describes Martina "educating herself" and coming out swinging.

What happened here seems clear. Navratilova began by asking an earnest question, one which is on the minds of many people as they watch these profound societal changes but are uninformed about the science and the specific claims invoked to justify these changes. Once she was excoriated without any mercy or understanding, it drove her further into a feeling of alienation from her accusers.

and now I'm fucking mad. GREENWALD YOU CONDESCENDING PIECE OF SHIT. He's basically saying Martina didn't research the issue and come to her own conclusions. Instead, she made a decision on the issues based on her feelings because the TRAs were mean to her. Oh, and obviously Renée Richards, also played a decisive role in her didactic op-ed. - women don't think for ourselves, we wait for the males to tell us what to think.

I had to stop reading at this point. I feel like I got suckerpunched by the misogyny because his obvious admiration for Navratilova made me let my guard down. It's ruined my mood tbh in ways that most misogynistic writing does not because it took me by surprise. Why are men LIKE this? It's fucking gross.

I think it stems from (and I'm generalising a bit here) men thinking they are the epitome of rational and logic. Therefore any position they adopt or are in favour of must therefore be rational and logic.

Women however favour emotive and therefore irrational judgments. So when a man like Glen doesn't agree with a woman's POV it couldn't possibly be because he has a blindspot or made an error in judgement, or even shock horror has made an emotive judgement himself. It must be because she is a bit hysterical.

I think that's roughly how it goes.

I think you nailed it, Ova.

He even admits he doesn't know anything about the subject! He admits that women's sports are Navratilova's life's work. The whole article is about how deluded, aggressive and unreasonable TRAs are. But he still can't join the fucking dots and wrap his head around the idea that the demands for males to be included in women's sports are another manifestation of that unreasonable and aggressive behaviour and that the woman he admires to the point of wanting to make a biopic of her, who devoted her life to women's sports, knows more about it than he does. It's maddening.

In fairness, the field of Mansplaining is both wide and deep; his managing to pull out in front like this shows a rare level of commitment.

Having said that: minor male writer seethes with envy over JK Rowling's unfathomable success, influence and riches. I mean, that's a story as common and pedestrian as... well. Dick pics?

He does write a good piece does Mr Greenwald, there is plenty to mull over in that article so thank you for posting Kantastic. He doesn't hold back even if I don't agree with all his conclusions. It's great he holds/held Martina in such high regard but he has been a twerp on Twitter on related issues.

I think Greenwald surely has doubts about how we have got to this position but is unable to give misogyny full credence. Probably for the reasons given above.

Why did the first producer get so much grief for her film. Same as Martina is now for saying men shouldn't compete in women's sports? Is it really such a wrong opinion to hold? Really? You cannot be serious to quote a famous male tennis player 😁

Greenwald writes that women are relentlessly, abusively slated for having their own opinions in this piece....& yet wonders why Martina (aren't we all) is so fucking resolute after recieving that abuse? Well there's no backing down to the bullies, it never works, we get to know this in our bones. It's why we're on the feminist boards supporting each other...
