Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born writer and activist against FGM and child marriage (among other things) has spoken out in support of JKR:

One of the first responses accuses her of cis privilege!

Good for her.
I see Katy Montgomery is there too, brandishing that omnipresent essay again.

Oh Lordy - and it's from a poster with BLM in their title!

Brilliant from her.

And there is never debate with these people responding, just accusations of “privilege” and wrongthink. We see them. They have no response BUT slurs. They have lost the argument.

Well said, Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

I read her book The Caged Virgin a number of years back. Must catch up with her more recent stuff.

And she's a prime example of why the "for us or agin us" nonsense of the twittersphere doesn't work. I agree with a lot of what she has to say on women's rights. I probably disagree with some of her politics. AFAIK, she's moderately right of centre.

(As a bit of an aside, I was amused to read an article by her husband, the right-of-centre economic historian Niall Ferguson, in which he mentioned - in the context of agreeing to disagree even with your nearest and dearest in the spirit of open and healthy debate - that Ayaan was pro Brexit, and he was a Remainer! So I would imagine dinner time conversations have given both of them plenty of practice in the art of disagreeing with someone without descending into cancel culture.)

Wow, takes some bottle telling a black woman off for privilege!

AHA has steel ovaries. She's taken on radical Islam. I doubt she will be cowed by a few blue haired numties.

Not at all surprised that Ali supports JKR. She doesn't take any shit. In any case, telling a woman who has been through female genital mutilation that being a woman is just a feeling in your head is so insensitive it beggars belief. (Except it doesn't, because TRAs really are that clueless.)

I heartily recommend Ali's memoir Infidel, by the way.

Isn’t AHA the person that Linda Sarsour said didn’t deserve her vagina?

You're assuming it's an actual person not a troll account.

BLM and trans stuff both feature highly in completely fake accounts started by malicious actors who don't believe their own tweets. Just doing it to troll the snowflakes, cause disruption, increase division... whatever.

It's such a common troll combo I'm now automatically suspicious of certain sorts of accounts.

Disgusting misogyny.

There is no “privilege” To experiencing FGM and forced marriage.

AHA has was long ago excommunicated from the left Because she interprets Islam to be at the root of her oppression - which is totally her experience and valid! I personally wouldn’t go quite as far as her (I don’t think everyone who wears Hijab is brainwashed), but I do think that being Muslim and being Christian do tend to bring with them some aspects of gender roles and patriarchy that can be problematic. Not every individual Believer to be sure, but overall all religions were established in patriarchy and bring with them that baggage.

Bloody tedious. It's like they sit watching all day so they can be first in on the comments everytime. It's just waffle.

Yes I confess, I tend to take tweets at face value unless I have reason to think otherwise. I'm probably quite Twitter naive compared to many on here.

As an anonymous Tweeter (because of my job) with few followers (because I don't really tout for them and most people don't follow back) I hate the assumption that anonymous with few followers = troll

Eh? Is anyone making that assumption. I'm not.

The anonymous Twitter account which has successfully baited people on this thread has a combination of markers which make me think it exists to... bait sincere people like those on this thread.

It's like spotting trolls on MN. And like troll-hunting on MN, I could be wrong.

I don't want to labour the topic here, because this thread was supposed to be about Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

I just didn't want to see it derailed from the start by what looks (IMHO) to be a professional derailer on Twitter.

Seeing the shit thrown J K Rowling's way and she still stepped up to the plate and tweeted her support - massive respect to the woman!

I think she didn't get on well with some of the other Ex-Muslims activists, but she definitely doesn't take shit from anyone, so I'm really pleased to see her make a stand. Hopefully she doesn't backtrack!
