Ok, still quite new to this so I really don't know all the ins and outs...was just listening to an old spiked podcast with Posie Parker and Venice (forgotten her surname) and found it really interesting, then went on twitter and found a lot of people criticising them over some drama that I can make no sense of. Could someone fill me in on the reason for people disliking them / give me a balanced view on what's going on?

I suggest you search MN and pull up some of the older threads. PP is quite marmite, as many strong opinionated women are.

Better than starting a new bunfight.

HappyPunky Fri 03-Jul-20 13:53:30

She's pretty and is a sahm with I think four kids. It was posie Parker who had the adverts put up with the dictionary definition of women.

Posie has been sent messages wishing death on her children, most recently covid.

She is also on Parley

I wasn't looking for gossip, sorry if that's how it came across. I was just looking for more information as I've been watching/listening to a lot of Posie Parker's stuff and have really rated it, but now have been reading references to her being racist/homophobe and obviously don't want to support that

Then search MN for older posts.

There can be concern that OPs like yours are being goady, as discussion of PP or indeed any of the brave women who stick their heads above the parapet can attract some quite aggressive posts. Inter alia she is not popular within the TRA community.

PAND0RA Fri 03-Jul-20 15:14:27

What @Needmoresleep said.

She stands up for women and girls, lots of people don’t like women who do this.

Didn't to me. Not sure why that ticking off was felt necessary.

Not all feminists agree with each other on all subjects. Some of them have actively fallen out over some things and perhaps have behaved in a less than stellar fashion. That would be just typical of people in general, wouldn't it?

Don't bother trying to unpack the squabbles, just assess what them on their own merits. They all say many wise and perceptive things, as well as a few daft and occasionally unkind things. Just like real people do.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown Fri 03-Jul-20 15:31:19

There've been a few arguments among various GC feminists. That's what happens with strong minded people and robust debate.
I think you'll find most people on here agree with Posie about somethings, disagree with her about others.
Although, whatever your opinion of her, I think most of us FWR regulars thoroughly enjoyed watching her on Sky News with Harrop.

It's not that TRA were criticising her, it was other GC people on twitter, hence my desire to understand more.

Look I'm new to this, with a little screaming baby, and I read stuff bleary eyed whilst he naps. I'm not looking to be goady. I'm just fully aware that as I'm only just starting to learn about different gender critical feminists (indeed only just realising I am one) I don't want to naively align myself to particular individuals that perhaps I shouldn't, due to not knowing the background.

That tv item is so delicious.

Floisme Fri 03-Jul-20 16:25:28

Welcome op, I was new here too not that long ago and my advice is to align yourself with facts and with arguments rather than individuals.

Posie is a divisive figure but I think most people would acknowledge she does some stuff very well. Indeed that's precisely why some people would love to take her down.

As to who gets on with who - honestly don't bother. It really pisses me off when people try and bring up their personal differences on here. It's tedious, playground stuff.

PAND0RA Fri 03-Jul-20 16:26:17

Perhaps you might find it useful to listen to what people have to say and decide what you think is fair and true. Rather than choosing someone to align with.

Content rather than personality or style.

Not very post modern I know.

Highperbolay Fri 03-Jul-20 16:27:54

I wasn't looking for gossip, sorry if that's how it came across.

It really didn't come across that way, some people like to just have a go at new posters totally unnecessarily I think.

Posie Parker is quite divisive, but I think that's OK. She has also spoken about her views on Islam which makes her more 'controversial' and I think might be more right wing leaning than left wing, which is of course an absolute crime in some circles! But what comes through every single time she speaks is her unwavering support for women and girls, and she doesn't care about how she looks to certain people, she cares about protecting women's rights. And for that I think she is fabulous, even if sometimes I slightly cringe at some things that she says.

Definitely watch that video of her and Adrian Harrop on Sky News, it is just glorious, I will never tire of watching it!

Lamahaha Fri 03-Jul-20 16:31:05

The one where she rages about what they did to JKR is my favourite. But I can't find it.

Highperbolay Fri 03-Jul-20 16:34:28

I don't want to naively align myself to particular individuals that perhaps I shouldn't, due to not knowing the background

I have learnt over the last few months/years that, on this issue, I do find myself aligning with people that I disagree with on absolutely every other issue! And also, that I agree with certain people but our views might be coming from a different place (mine are coming from a women's rights perspective, some others might be coming from a homophobic/transphobic perspective of the 'morality' of being transgender etc).

It's been uncomfortable for me, as I know it has with many other women on this site and beyond, because I am so used to being on 'the same side' as so many people that I now find myself disagreeing with on this particular issue. It can be a difficult thing to come to terms with, but the other thing I have learnt recently is that tribal politics is bloody toxic, and also for a lot of these people, unless you capitulate entirely to a certain way of thinking you are a 'bigot' anyway, so I might as well just believe what I believe and not worry about which 'side' I am on in this particular debate.

FantaOra Fri 03-Jul-20 16:35:01

She absolutely isn't racist or homophobic but unfortunately if those things get said often enough they take on a life of their own.

Aesopfable Fri 03-Jul-20 16:38:56

Could someone fill me in on the reason for people disliking them

It is very simple - they are women who can say ‘no’

ItsLateHumpty Fri 03-Jul-20 16:43:18

Hey OP brew FWR is brutal, amazing, forthright, and brilliant.

Lose your ‘female’ socialisation, make tea only because you want to, and fcuk floor cleaning.
Have coffee. Stick around.

I hope you’re still about. Read stuff. Or ask.

BentBastard Fri 03-Jul-20 16:48:35

Some of the responses like this poster is getting here are quite unhelpful.

The success of protection of women's spaces against self ID completely depends upon engagement of people that are currently uneducated about and unfamiliar with the argument. Responses like this will put new people off engaging.

I've been around here (albeit quietly) long enough to know the problems this forum has had with infiltration and "ploppers" but I really think people need to be taken at face value unless they actually say anything offensive otherwise there is no hope of engaging new people and informing them.

This.

I have enormous respect for a lot of people who happen to loathe one another, in my own life. Isn't that normal? People don't always get on. Sometimes they fundamentally disagree. The shared beliefs aren't really relevant.

My understanding is that Posie Parker will talk to pretty much anyone who will give her a platform, and frankly, she's the reason we have a voice now, because when she began, the left sure as hell weren't willing to platform us. They were full throttle #nodebate. She's one of the people who crashed through that by refusing to accept that decree, and saying in effect: okay, you won't let me talk? I'll go to whoever will.

I note that various TRAs are happy to write pieces for all manner of right-wing papers, and when they do, everyone falls over themselves to praise their willingness to educate. The double standards, yet again, and demand for purity in gender critical women while demonising and silencing us is as abusive. People who threaten to rape and kill us then have the utter gall to purse lips and tut when our activism doesn't suit them. And by, "doesn't suit them" they mean, "is too successful".

They say JK Rowling is racist, too, by the way. And homophobic. Because goblins being gold-hoarding bankers is an anti-Semitic trope. Weird, given it's a standard fantasy trope, but since when did facts bother that lot? They even deny biological reality: denying facts is a specialist area.

MindTheMinotaur Fri 03-Jul-20 16:54:02

Hi Goldencurtain the FWR board sometimes attracts people who aren't posting in good faith and a lot of people are fed up.

I suspect what you've heard about is that Posie was no platformed by WPUK a couple of years ago around a couple of tweets she made about very young girls wearing the hijab. I don't think she's racist or right wing, she's a Labour voter I believe.

She's done some great things around her Adult Human Female campaign, a lot of stuff paid for out of her own pocket.

One of the great eye openers for me around cancel culture has been learning never to take anything at face value. I hope you get some sleep soon.
