What is it to 'work full time in a gender role'???

I had hoped that this nonsense was mainly centred in Cardiff (for now) but it seems to be spreading into other areas of Wales.

This is on a job application form -

I have so many issues with this.

  1. For someone to answer this question, they need to know what exactly 'gender' is. Who gets to decide exactly what those definitions are for this employer? Where's the manual?
  2. It doesn't allow you to opt out of answering the question like a lot of questions that allow you to say 'prefer not to say'
  3. It then presumes you believe in gender ideology and makes you give an answer within that framework
  4. You're not assigned a gender at birth. You are 'assigned' a sex because they are making a judgment on biology.
  5. What the fuck does it mean to work, or not work full time within a gender role

I put this last question to you, ladies & gentlemen.

If we're going back to 1950's gender roles (which seems to be what all this is based on), how about when we're at work, we offer everyone cups of tea and suggest that we do their ironing for them? Is that working in a gender 'role'? I'd say most of you would answer 'yes' to the last question. Afterall, if we're sticking to dated gender stereotypes, most of you would not have continued working after having children, and thus, would be working in the opposite role or gender 'assigned' to you at birth!

Surely a full time gender role is like Head of Diversity for Stonewall or something.

So you're assigned a gender at birth AND a gender role? Blimey the Welsh must have very long birth certificates.

Yes. Because, presumably that pile of word salad is also translated into Welsh too. Confused

I don't want to give to much away (in case there's some lovely people trawling our answers looking for clues who we are).

From the answers that lots of people we're giving to the ridiculous gender quiz posted a couple of days ago I think many Mumsnetters (including me) live in a different gender role! Ffs that question is awful

I have a feeling that people from more Welsh speaking areas who could actually read it in Welsh wouldn't be down with this at all!! I can just imagine the flippant things some people I know would say. They'd be utterly confused by it. @maudspellbody

Completely insane.

If I tried to answer in a way that most closely reflected reality the employer would I guess interpret me as being trans and on board with the premise of the questions.

For that reason I would give a pair of answers that were contradictory, as you have done, and using the same selection you have

@riverbat In a way, it's transing you whether you like it or not.

I'm just delurking as new to the GC debates but as a Welsh speaker, the word rhyw in Welsh means both sex and gender. So the Welsh language doesn't appear to differentiate. I'd be interested in knowing from any other Welsh speakers if they have heard any other way to express gender as different to sex.

The last form I filled in asked:
A yw eich rhyw presennol yr un fath â’ch rhyw pan gawsoch eich geni?

which translates both as:
Is your present gender the same as the gender you were assigned at birth?
AND
Is your present sex the same as the sex you were assigned at birth?

Oh yeah @bookwitch . That's a tricky one. I think rhywedd might be used by a small minority. Most Welsh people I know would just be confused by the whole debate.

I've not heard rhywedd before. Interesting

Actually it's got a helpful element. It sorts out the Pippa Bunces and the Meg Johns of this world from full time trans people.

I mean, it's a step.

4) You're not assigned a gender at birth. You are 'assigned' a sex because they are making a judgment on biology.

TBH, nobody assigns you a sex either, because you already have one when you are born, for some reason. It is just recorded when your birth is registered.

I would think you need to substitute the word “gender” with “sex” to properly answer the questions.
So live and work as opposite SEX, as in if you are a man have you been living and working performing as a woman?

But then again maybe not, because they have “role” added in there. I agree those are some really stupidly worded questions.

I’d be asking them whether or not collecting this data complies with their responsibilities under GDPR. GDPR allows for processing of personal data surrounding protected characteristics. Last time I checked, gender identity at any time was not mentioned anywhere in the Equalities Act.

"Is your gender sex-role stereotype identity identification the same as the gender sex-role stereotypes you were assigned at birth?"

Always helps to put the words they've missed back in.

Second question's fine, so far as I can see - it's asking have you tried to leave behind your enforced-femininity box and inveigle your way into the performative-masculinity box (or vice versa).

I'd have to answer no to both questions. Dunno what they'd think I am, based on that.

I'm female and work in IT, so I guess that's out of bounds, BUT I'm a team leader who does a lot of team morale stuff and reports /admin... as all us laydees should. I also have a child so any paid work is out of role now, I should be a housewife, right?

TehBewilderness · 30/06/2020 22:46

Is it legal for them to ask that. I do not think it is. Asking about gender reassignment is discriminatory.

Yes I know. That's why I wrote assigned in inverted commas.
