Well done JKR! Well earned.

This has made me smile.

Imnobody4 Tue 30-Jun-20 10:55:10

Great news. And well done the judges.

I really like JKR but I think that it's far from the best book from the past 30 years. It's good and has encouraged lots of children to read but there have been many better books over that time.

OliveKitteridgeAgain Tue 30-Jun-20 11:02:05

Huge congratulations, JKR!

I loved this comment:

Most sincere congratulations to She Who Will Not Be Cancelled

I really like JKR but I think that it's far from the best book from the past 30 years. It's good and has encouraged lots of children to read but there have been many better books over that time.

I would say it's been one of the most influential books (or series of books) in that time, though. Definitely the most famous. I don't recall any other books having release parties, midnight openings etc etc, or shaping a whole generation like HP did.

So it may not be, literary speaking, the best book, but I would say the most... dominant? memorable? Cultural important? I'm not sure what the right word is!

ScrimpshawTheSecond Tue 30-Jun-20 11:22:26

Aw, congrats and well done.

OldeMagick Tue 30-Jun-20 11:24:19

Fantastic news! grin

BiggerBoat1 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:26:40

Its a tough one. It is an important book because it inspired a whole generation of children to get reading. I am grateful to JKR for that! However, it isn't very well written so I'm not sure it sits well with me to have it named 'best book' of the last 30 years.

Redshoeblueshoe Tue 30-Jun-20 11:29:29

Congratulations JKR. flowers

Isn't the answer simply "the most popular"? It's sold 120 million copies. The next closest in the last 30 years is The Da Vinci Code with 80 million. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books

truthisarevolutionaryact Tue 30-Jun-20 11:35:06

Excellent news. It must be hard to argue against such clear evidence of popularity that those statistics demonstrate grin

Divoc2020 Tue 30-Jun-20 11:35:18

Although am disappointed to see publishers such as Penguin erasing the word 'Women' [sigh]

In terms of its impact on reading and reading habits of children since publication, it probably is the "best book" from the past 30 years.
I'm just delighted that the panel did not change their decision given the current climate.

nolongersurprised Tue 30-Jun-20 11:37:09

However, it isn't very well written so I'm not sure it sits well with me to have it named 'best book' of the last 30 years.

Do you remember though, when each book came out and children would read through the night to see what happened next? When I read them all out loud to my children (4 times round for all the books!) I gained a new appreciation for how well the stories held their attention and how funny parts of them were.

truthisarevolutionaryact Tue 30-Jun-20 11:38:07

The word womxn is such bollx.

Apileofballyhoo Tue 30-Jun-20 11:44:31

I was pleased to see this. Thank goodness they didn't cancel her... It's probably the best one of the series too.

What children's books from the past 30 years would you recommend BiggerBoat and Cariadlet?

JemimaShore Tue 30-Jun-20 11:49:57

Really pleased to see this today smile

Congratulations JK Rowling - well deserved thanks

Where's the website for the awards? I looked here, and it doesn't seem to be mentioned?
www.thebookseller.com/british-book-awards

It is mentioned in their news section though
www.thebookseller.com/news/carty-williams-queenie-wins-book-year-british-book-awards-1208557

I'm surprised it didn't get more coverage, as the 30-year prize was specially to coincide with their 30 year anniversary.

teawamutu Tue 30-Jun-20 12:11:36

I've noticed 3 women MPs - at least one Labour - tweeting in support of JKR today smile

lady69 Tue 30-Jun-20 12:39:40

Fantastic! What a woman!

MountainWitch Tue 30-Jun-20 12:52:05

I think JKR is a great writer- this is well deserved and I echo the pp who mentioned the judges- they appear to have some gumption.

MingeofDeath Tue 30-Jun-20 13:04:37

Well done JK
