How can you be transgender and non-binary?

Ok I’m genuinely confused about this.

An author called Fox Fisher has left JK Rowlings literary agency over transgender rights.

According to the Times article (sorry no share token) Fox identifies as a “transgender non-binary person” and uses the pronoun they.

I just....don’t get it? I mean if you’re non-binary you’re saying you don’t identify as either of the two genders, so how you can you also say you are not the gender you were “assigned” at birth?

Anybody explain this one to me?

Well if you are not the gender assigned at birth / the gender assumed by others based on your sex, then you have transported yourself away ?

Having seen this discussed a number of times I've come round to the view that arguing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin is pointless if you don't believe in angels.

It's a 'clever' way of avoiding accusations of promoting gender stereotypes. While simultaneously promoting gender stereotypes.

And it also allows you to co-opt the identity of another oppressed minority and speak for them too.

Glad it’s not just me who’s confused! It just makes no sense at all.

Jess Bradley, first Trans Officer of the NUS, identified as a Non Binary Trans Woman. And we all know where that finished up. Hmm

Basically the trans umbrella includes everything and anything, including non binary, agender, cross-dressers... I don't identify as "cisgender" so I suppose I am transgender too. Aren't we all?

Yes! nauticant thank you. I don’t believe so it’s all irrelevant to me.

Literally no idea.

I dont get it either. The whole idea that the binary doesnt exist yet is simultaneously necessary in order to define yourself against it leaves me very confused

so I know someone who identifies as gender queer, non binary (pronouns they/them) and is currently fundraising for a double mastectomy and masculinisation hormone treatment. I am very sad for them and the family - we don't applaud and enable anorexia or body dysmorphia or delusional misidentification syndrome (a patient in Germany identified as an amputee and an American woman identified as a blind person and paid a doctor to use drain cleaner to blind her) so why are we encouraging young people to undergo major surgery to fix an neurological issue?

Ah Jess Bradley, now there's a blast from that past! Smile

I'm pretty sure Fox and Owl have always been 'non-binary' because I remember when I first heard of them a couple of years ago and was confused by the 'non-binary transgender' thing at the time.

Essentially, they are just a het couple though - how very boring....

Stonewall's definition of trans includes people who identify as non-binary:

An umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth.
Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois.

So transgender people are trans and non-binary people are trans. I don't know if there are any rules as to which/how many of these terms one can identify as. All I do know is that a female cannot identify as a trans woman, even if you are a woman who fits the above definition of trans.

I'm not sure that really helps anyone but these are the closest things to definitions we've got.

Funnily enough I was just musing the natural progression of this nonsense. Babies obviously should not be assigned a sex at birth in case they are misgendered.

According to the TRAs they may know what gender they are is by the time they are 3, or it may be later. (Not sure what that does for the 50 year old blokes who don’t decide until late in life).

I guess all should be given gender neutral names.

I can imagine it will be abusive to say you have a girl or a boy and you are literally murdering children.

Anything else is oppressive and trans phobic.
