Feminism: Sex & gender discussions

So if Netflix and HBO also removed anything sexist or misogynist, what would that look like?

What would the streaming services need to remove? There would be nothing left!

I'll start: all of James Bond up till about 10 years ago.

Pretty Woman (obviously)

All the older Disney princess movies

Pretty much any romcom.

Grease. Dirty Dancing.

Actually, those probably aren't on Netflix.

But you know what I mean.

Oh I reckon most of what they show, but there was one new show I started watching a couple of weeks ago and had to stop pithing 5 minutes it was so anti women and creepy - Retribution I think it was called.

But of course, no one ever condemned misogyny or sexism with the same level of commitment as condemning racism.

And of course, Game of Thrones or porn on Sky as I liked to call it.

And really any movie from the past - I watched some old movies recently that I used to watch as a child with my mum (they were favourites from when she was a child / teen) with Doris Day / Audrey Hepburn etc - wow, none of them ave aged well. It really is staggering.

They might be able to show gardening programmes?

I was thinking this earlier
Add in everything where men dress as women and there goes a load more.

They might be able to show gardening programmes?

But not Ground Force. Because of the way Charlie Dimmock was objectified all those years ago.

I actually find it frightening how many 'happy hooker' shows there are on Netflix

Ru Paul. Not sure why blackface is unacceptable and the shit they say in the drag community is fine.

I've been thinking much the same.

Hot Girls Wanted.
The first one is a sensitive look at "amateur porn" that is heartbreaking. The second taps more into the "happy hooker" ideology with a horrific scene with a woman who is being injured during sex scenes and is encouraged not to symptom because filming has commenced. It's roundly hailed as brilliant because it's "porn made by a woman".

Cos it's obviously not coercion if it's by a woman...

I watched Groundhog Day recently with my teens, and there's a bit in it where he is pressuring the female TV producer to have sex, and it was really uncomfortable watching.

I am a victim of domestic abuse and I find that there is very little I can watch on TV. There is just many drama where abuse of women is used as a form of entertainment.

I am basically down to cooking programs. I joke that tv should come with a trigger warning for misogyny but there would be nothing on.

Blossom513 · 10/06/2020 21:28

Gosh when you think about it there wouldn't be much left to watch on tv. But it would never happen. And that says it all. How depressing.

Err ... actually, the one where he essentially rapes a women he knows has been a sex slave since she was a child and then watches impassively as she’s shot dead and does nothing to help her was only made 8 years ago. I think we’re going to have to rule out Bond altogether.

Report
Geometricprince · 10/06/2020 21:34

What cremuel said. I remember watching that bond film and being horrified. He raped her! But it was OK coz he's bond. So yeah, bond is definitely out.

I think a sizeable minority of war movies would survive, simply because there's very few appearances by women in that minority.

MoltenLasagne · 10/06/2020 21:44

Brooklyn 99 would survive. Would shows that are critical of the displayed misogyny be OK? There is a lot of misogyny in Unorthodox for example but it's definitely a feminist series.

Pretty much any romcom.

Grease. Dirty Dancing.

I think Dirty Dancing is a feminist film! Strong female character with her own narrative arc, abortion storyline which shows the double standards for women.
