Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

An unacknowledged epidemic of child abuse

Two recent pieces discussing the epidemic of sexual abuse of children by men caused by men’s arousal by the abuse and rape of children.

Interview with Julie Bindel by Megan Murphy on Feminist Current where she discusses the commercial trade of children for sexual abuse by men in Rotherham. Julie’s main point is that the elephant in the room isn’t the race of the rapists in it’s their sex and the fact that society as a whole does not want to face up to the fact that a significant and growing minority of men are aroused by sexually assaulting and raping children. She points out that in her understanding the police do not care about child abuse particularly and were happy to be given an excuse to ignore the thousands of children being sold to men to rape.

Also an article in The Times today about the increasing numbers of porn addicted younger men who are now seeking out images of child abuse to masturbate to as they have become desensitised by chronic use of other types of pornography.

Where does this sick drive come from? It seems to transcend socioeconomic class, race and indeed every other classification of human beings other than that of sex. A significant minority of women are not doing this, a significant minority of men from every walk of life are. Why is it happening and how can it be stopped?

Julie advises pressuring the judicial system to prosecute these men properly and holding everyone from the police, to judges to prisons accountable.

The advice from the Times article:

Mr Bailey, the chief constable of Norfolk, told the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)that a new generation was being drawn to child abuse imagery.

“We have got to start being very honest about this, we have got to start debating this more in public,” he said.
“We’ve got to start coming to terms with the fact that there are some appalling things taking place online that unfortunately the internet is probably the root of most of the evils.
“We have to start looking at that and we have to start genuinely asking the question, how much more are we going to tolerate?”

The Times and Internet Watch Foundation's Headlines are strange. The IWF article does not suggest that either "British men" or "UK men" are peculiar in this respect.

This is absolutely dreadful but is it happening because of a progression from hard-core porn - or just because it is there and it easily accessible?

Either way it is horrific!

I think it's both a progression caused by desentisation and, in some cases is being actively pushed by porn companies trying to break the next boundary. The increase of incest porn for example is very much driven by the industry who see it as an easy way to break boundaries (and therefore be more appealing to desensitised porn sick men) without extra outlays beyond what actors call each other. Anyone who thinks exposure to "Step daughter entices step father" storylines isn't increasing CSA cases is being willfully naive.

I think the densensitisation acaused by porn is causing some serious moral and sexual sickness and depravity in men.

I've said it before but I think the glut of internet porn is a drug the consumption of which most men can't control because it taps into the sex drive which is so powerful. They are addicts hooked on sexual crack.

They are like toddlers in a sweetshop gorging themselves and making themselves sick - morally and sexually sick and vomiting the results onto women and now apparently children.

The trouble is that most porn use, as always, is done secretly so we don't see what the men we know are looking at. A lot of us bury our heads in the sand about this. I think a lot of people would utterly freak out if they saw their current male partner's search history, the volume of usage and the type things they have been watching real humans subjected to sexually (no, it's not 'fantasy' mate, those are real people).

Even when said histories are discovered, women society-wide have been gaslit into agreeing that men's porn use is acceptable behaviour and we're just prudish and jealous so there is no moral mechanism to get men to stop consuming this stuff. No shame. No consequences except an upset partner and hey ho, if she won't put out due to the upset, there's always the internet which offers more variety anyway.. as well as the abuse of victims portrayed in porn, it's ruining relationships too, some young women's sex lives seem to basically consist of acting out men's degradation fantasies. Some young men can't even get it up anymore for 'ordinary' sex. It won't stop unless we, women, unionise and act in a zero tolerance way about modern porn use because of what it's doing to us all.

A poster on another thread once said that until porn use is treated and discussed in the same way that cheating is, nothing will change. This issue needs sunlight, sunlight, sunlight.

Not to discuss it on this thread because that might get this deleted as a "Thread About A Thread" but as I was reading the replies here, and as I type now, this thread is Trending on Mumsnet . . .

I think another issue related to this is the prevalence of adult female modules who look very young (think 25 year old who looks 12), and markets themselves based on their sexuality and child like appearance. This then blurs the lines between adults and children in the realm of sexual fantasy. (A ex friend of mine started doing very sexualised modelling, using the fact she had and still does look about 12, and plays up this fact by using very childlike imagery/props in her modelling).

I've also known and seen other adult females who realising there is a market for adults who look prepudesecent have also attempted to cash into the modeling/porn industry.

What always disheartens and astonishes me is when women appear on these threads and defend porn. Telling us that we are harried old hags to not get with the programme. That porn is empowering and they love nothing more than watching porn with their partner.

Its weird because we would never accept that a black person watching a portrayal of black people as slaves being abused by a white person should see that as empowering of the black person (and if they did we would agree that they had mental health problems) but we seem to accept women who watch their own abuse at the hands of men, willingly and complicity, and we do not see the huge cognitive dissonance at play. Why?

There's been an increasing move in the past decade or so towards excusing almost any sexual fantasy as an involuntary, essential part of who someone is. The apologists mught have started out by saying that they don't condone acting on such fantasies, but the mask is slipping.

It has developed alongside a sneery dismissal of more "ordinary" sex as "vanilla", something dull and conservative. Even though many people find "vanilla sex" perfectly satisfying.

That is a very powerful analogy! No doubt there is an academic somewhere writing a batshit defence of "intersectional, sex-positive, inter-racial BDSM". Things have got so warped, probably black and female Sad

@MoleSmokes yes, I agree. We are probably only providing more creative fodder for the sick minds.

It’s fuelling it for sure. And agree it’s a sick addiction being exacerbated by the internet but I also think it’s always been there. My mother in law is a volunteer for the samaritans and has said that so many people she speaks to have been victims of incest. It seems that it’s a huge unspoken problem. So, the internet has made it worse but the crux of the problem is that some men want to hurt children in the most depraved way possible.
I seem to remember Sheila Jeffries talking about one of her early books which looked at the first wave feminists in the Victorian era. One of the main things they achieved was speaking out about men raping their daughters and other children and it was these first wave women who were behind bringing in the age of consent of 16 to the UK.
So, even before the internet and the explosion in pornography the sickness was still there and the progress made was by bringing it into the open and stigmatising it and saying it was not allowed.
