NY Times: ‘Transphobia Is Everywhere in Britain’

Yet another ridiculously narcissistic and paranoid article by a TRA attempting to smear feminists and shut down debate. On the positive side, I guess it indicates that gender-critical people are actually having more success here in getting their voices heard here in Britain than across the Pond.

www.nytimes.com/2020/03/09/opinion/britain-transphobia-labour-party.html

“Transphobia Is Everywhere in Britain
It’s a respectable bigotry, on the left as well as the right.”

I am very proud to be British at this point. We can still think, have critical faculties and can see through bullshit ideologies.

I cannot adequately express how little it perturbs me to be called a transphobe nowadays. Totally water off a duck's back. In conversation over the past years, on Twitter, here, facebook and various forums, (And actually, I think there was an instance on FWR in the last day or so) I've read a vacuous shocked 'You realize that means you don't think transwomen are women?!' like that is a statement that should be roundly contradicted with mea culpas rather than replied to with a nod and a "Yes, that's right, they're not". And then you get the whole jibbering transphobia rallying cry.

No.
Shits.
Given.

It is an interesting question as to why the defiance is happening here. We are not a religious people on the whole, we tend to be sceptical of all sorts of things and we don’t have much of a history of thought control - whether via the church or via government.

What we should probably do more of is another British trait - pricking (!) pomposity with humour. We should be laughing at this and at, for example, the contortions that are required to contemplate the female penis. I don’t want to laugh at confused teenage girls because I feel sorry for them but the likes of Yaniv and Bunce surely deserve to be laughed at.

As George Orwell didn't say

I'm not at this stage yet but I imagine being called a transphobe is a bit like how you're teenager says they hate you. The first time it really hurts and then it's said every other day and the impact wears off and you're more concerned about doors staying in hinges.

If I was in a water cooler conversation in the NY Times offices my response would be:

"Yeah yeah, transphobia is rife, you can't move for the transphobia in Britain honestly but the misogyny? I mean, let me tell you, that is really serious. Women are literally dying of misogyny."

The NYT can fuck off. Next.

I saw a Tony Law gig where he talked about why we voted for Brexit, he put it down to the British tendency to enjoy saying "Fuck off!!" Could something similar be happening with this?

Or did we just get more warning of what's happened in Canada, USA etc.

Definitely proud of our response!

J Jacques had a regular Guardian column describing the transition process a few years back.

Jacques was the left wing version of that knob in the Telegraph at the moment Grin

Perhaps some self reflection would be useful?

The person most knowledgeable to answer this question about the resistance of British women is likely to be Prof Selina Todd. She more than most, probably knows why and how British women tend to spot bullshit a mile away and reject it.

Transphobia is everywhere in Britain?

Hmm

Lots of stupid ideas come out of the US. I like to think that us Brits like to use our critical thinking skills. Not saying that everyone in the US lacks them but we don't have as much deference towards people in positions of authority/have a platform etc. Also as a PP said, we do enjoy bringing people down who are up their own arse.

ROwantrees I think he means that defiant women are everywhere in Britain. He is correct in that thought. Wink

I wonder how much was because the potential GRA reforms happened to get into the public eye. As people realised what was happening that galvanised discussion.

There also seem to have been more forums for discussion, one being MN but also things like women's groups. In Canada there seem to have been few groups of this type - I've looked for some but it's a real lack, even internet groups. I've been able to find out much less than I'd like about the technicalities of the situation in Canada and I live here.

Daria, I knew what was coming when I clicked in the YouTube link, of course, but still - confirmation of sex without the slightest need for undignified examination, within the two seconds it took to register the images on my screen.

extract from article in OP,
"Lisa Nandy, the one farthest away, supported the campaign. The outcry was immediate: People started the hashtag #expelme on Twitter. Hecklers disrupted leadership hustings"

Dr Julia Long, one of the researchers for the UK femicide census asked Lisa Nandy MP

"Should male child rapists be housed in female or male estate prison?

Should male sex offenders who identify as women have their crimes be recorded as committed by women?

Should women be described as being in a 'hate group' if we ask questions like this?"

Or ‘Critical Thinking and. Lively Interest in Preventing the Erosion of Hard-Won Women’s Rights Prevalent in Britain’?

Not so snappy, is it?

Wankery.

But it's getting noticed that there are many grassroots feminist orgs in the UK fighting this single issue.

That's not pleasing some lobby groups.

It must be strange to have your career based on a false premise that you have sought to impose.

Honestly, this is my heartwarming, end of the day internet moment for today, actually. There have been an increasing numbers of these petulant tantrums dressed up as articles, describing the UK as a ravening hotbed of transphobia, and given that they all define transphobia as women standing up to misogynist bullies and refusing to be cowed into silence, it makes me very, very proud to be living in the UK right now.
