Covering the story about Keira Bell.

Moving interview with Keira, who speaks very well.
"What advice would you have given to your 16 year old self?"
"That's a difficult question because I know that perhaps I could say anything to my 16-year-old self and they might not listen. That's the point of why I'm speaking out - it shouldn't have been up to me.'

Paraphrased.

Keira spoke very eloquently and movingly. I feel so sad for her.

Then consultant from Tavistock, who explained process.

Alison Holt, BBC correspondent on now, who is covering the story and interviewed Keira.

Stresses that the thing that Keira is most concerned with highlighting are the mental health difficulties that were running alongside the gender dysphoria and how they were not properly addressed.

Talking with Jeremy now about consent, and what age that should be.

Very measured - "Because this is an area of such heat, the hope [from Tavistock/Keira/others] is that this will give the clinical issues the clear space to be discussed without damaging debate"

Alison Holt really trying very hard to keep her words calm and measured.

Now Susie Green from Mermaids... to minimise and say everything's all FINE.

SG begins with the "I really appreciate Mermaids being able to have a voice in this" ... clearly implying they usually don't!

SG focusing HARD on the fact that KB had a mastectomy at 20 under adult services, and therefore that the original hormone treatment was not the problem.

Ooh. Alison Holt obviously hopping up and down to try to get Jeremy's attention to interrupt SG. Excellent.

It's the way youngsters are being led to believe that you can be in the 'wrong' body and that transition will solve their issues.

Mermaids are complicit.

Alison Holt saying "RESEARCH" and that SG's claims of only 1% regret transitioning must be examined carefully as the numbers are not clear.

Did Susie Green not take her son to Thailand at 16 for surgery which wasn’t available here?

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/03/2020 12:52

SG saying she's not sure what more can be put in the way of hoops - it's not about barriers about the whole conversation around the actual ideology.

Report
NeurotrashWarrior · 03/03/2020 12:53

Yes she's avoided that pertinent point.

I don't think the statistic that around 80% or more trans questioning yp do actually desist is discussed enough.

There's an assumption by mermaids and so by default by society now that as soon as you say you're trans, you are.

Great first caller.

Oh god the school encouraged her daughter's transition! To be seen as inclusive!

I hadn't thought of this factor, that schools can use these pupils to prove their diversity!

Fuck

First caller was excellent. DD who at puberty announced she was trans. Parents supported social transition (dressing as boy etc) and referred to Tavi. 18 months later DD is now back to being happy as a girl. Possibly related to lesbian feelings, no signs in younger times. Deeply upset with how school handled it, encouraging pronoun change etc which they felt was inappropriate. Mentioned ROGD, online influence etc. Very calm caller.

Fairly good debate for JV show standards.

That poor mother just called in at the end, you could hear the pain and relief in her voice. Such dangerous influences online that obviously got to her daughter at the worst possible time. Thank goodness she didn't go too far.

Schools are in such a hard position. They are so afraid of be splashed all over the media for being transphobic if they aren't seen to be fully supportive because that's exactly what would happen. The trans activists would be after their blood.

There must be cash involved for the schools to be so interested in this.

To quote the phone-in caller..
'The schools eyes seem to light up when I told them"

It can't just be money for diversity training, there must be something else going on here.
Medics are no longer allowed to accept skiing holidays or other expensive perks anymore, but perhaps the same lobby groups are throwing money into the education sector which maybe doesn't have the same regulations.

I wonder how much of the girl's decision to transition (the daughter of the woman who called in at the end) was related to puberty. Who wants to have periods and period pain every month and to grow breasts and get unwanted attention from boys?

If I could click my fingers and be a man, I probably would. I think of all the things I could do without worrying - running on my own in the dark for one thing.

It must be so heartbreaking for parents who are going through this.

I will not let Jeremy Vine off the hook over this. He gets paid so much money from the BBC, he needs to speak out for those who cannot.

Hmm re cash.

This is possible via a round about way, to get more resources for the school but if I'm honest afaik for primary level it's often for material heavy heavy specialist subjects such as pe, music, art.

For example, if a school is part of a trust they then have charitable status. This benefits them for certain tax exemptions. I they can accept bursaries to fund projects which includes training but may also include material costs for new books or putting on events or buying in sports deliverers or artists etc. (I'm not clear if if you're not in a trust if you can get the same bursaries.)

However it is possible that trans identifying students mean the school can demonstrate their "inclusion" in action which can mean the achievement of a quality mark they may be working for. Some schools are sad enough to simply want the highest level of any quality mark, and stop at little to get it. All adds to the "we are great" vibe.
