Bumping - it's the Cynthia Nixon monologue to a blog piece about the inequalities and contradictions women face. I think the creative execution of it is stunning.

Amazing. I like Cynthia Nixon. Did she write it too or just perform it?

She performed it, written by a young blogger I believe.

No wonder girls want to be boys and escape this shit, I felt the same when I was young when the pressures were less. But girls need to know that they can wear and do what they want, just BE, and still be a girl, not trans.

I wish women on TV were less made up. You just don’t see enough women on Screen without makeup, who are overweight (or normal weight even), women who don’t make much of an effort to be „Glam“. I’m thinking Angela Merkel vibe, kinda thing — smart, but only in the way that men are expected to be smart... The females often have a lot more skin showing, figure hugging dresses etc. Even female newsreaders, ffs. Or interviewees on Newsnight and the like. Drives me batty. I feel this has got worse over the last decade or so...

I didn't realise she has a daughter who she calls her son.

Nixon has political hopes and is a lesbian, I'm just a bit disappointed as the video is about women and expectations on women and it can't just be that, for me, if the person performing the monologue also believes that men can be women.

Even though Nixon appears to be on board with T being with the LGB, the scripting, performance and graphic nature of this video is powerful.

Oh holy Jesus - really?

You feel disappointed that a mother of a dysphoric child, in the public eye by an accident of their birth, uses their child's preferred gender descriptions in public communications?

I feel disappointed that you post that.

I don't believe that people can change sex. But I do think their mothers should be given a free pass to call them what they want.

Well I do think there was a discussion about it, based on what I've read, about using the preferred pronoun in public.

My take on it is that her daughter felt pressures around growing up, as listed in the video, that have lead to the dysmorphia and
I don't doubt for a moment that it would be difficult to challenge that and bring her daughter to a place where she is happy with her body, but I disagree with affirmation so I can't fully support a woman, however I admire her and agree with her, for defending women if she herself believes that that group includes men.

It would require a conversation with her personally that won't happen so I have to take it as a find it.

As I said, I find it a very powerful video.

I imagine she is walking a very difficult tightrope, but I can't get on board with this 100%.

Not clear on what basis you are asserting that CN believes women includes males

I reject the gender binary. Don't all GC women?

Report
fascinated · 28/02/2020 20:46

I’m not keen on gender at all. Bio sex is enough for me. I don’t even understand what „binary“ means in “ gender binary“... if gender is about how masculine or feminine you present, then yes, it is a spectrum. But it has nothing to do with sex and should never be used as a marker for categorising humans, only sex is relevant for that.

don't like some of the images used. Can't they do the story without showing us the anal bleaching even if it is badly bleeped out?

Nixon talking about her son.

I wasn't particularly impressed by that video. It was a very carefully selected series of extreme images chosen to show what an enlightened, serious person Nixon is , or would like to be thought as. It's promoting her- nothing else.

Bit hypocritical given she made her name in a series which was obsessed with women being glamorous at all times, including the character she played.
