The Gift (play): Micro-aggressions are a daily reality for Black women

As discussed on Woman's Hour today with Janice Okoh and Dawn Walton.

An outrageous play about imperialism, cross-racial adoption, cultural appropriation...and tea.

Brighton, 1862. A day in the life of Sarah, an African girl, adopted by Queen Victoria and raised in the Queen’s circles. Today is the eve of her having to return to Africa but will she go?

The present. A day in the life of Sarah, a black middle-class woman staying in a Cheshire village with her husband and small child. They are paid a visit by well-meaning neighbours who have something to confess…

The two Sarahs meet Queen Victoria for tea. This won’t be your regular tea party…

No - I was wondering if anyone here had so that I could justify the herding cats ahead of me if I try and match up calendars with family members.

(I know it was on WH but they don't do a transcript so I didn't hear it.)

Yes I've seen it, it was excellent and well worth seeing. I don't think It's focus is women though. Both Sarah's have husbands who are of course also subject to micro aggression, and more in the course of the play,
The Victorian Sarah could have been a boy, and the play set in a more 'male' environment. Sarah just happened to have been a girl. Its a play about racism.
I attended an after show discussion with the actors, none of the women seemed to be thinking about it in terms of being a female issue.

The WH interview was all about colonialism and racism as far as I remember, not sexism.

I didn't hear the interview. The Victorian Sarah is 'The Gift' to the queen as empress. She could have been a boy. The play could stand with Sarah as a male character. The key themes are racism and colonialism
