The view of Mumsnet from Reddit

Not sure how I got there, but I found myself reading a reddit conversation in answer to the question 'Why is mumsnet so transphobic?'

www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/comments/ewqit7/why_is_mumsnet_so_transphobic/

I have tried to compile the various suggestions. Even if you accept the premisese of the question, see if you agree with the answers, many of which are assumptions about Mumsnet posters.

  1. Its owners are transphobic

  1. Its users are middle aged, middle or upper class, white, CIS, uneducated women

  1. Other, similar boards are too right-wing. Oh, but its users all follow Katie Hopkins and read the Sun

  1. Some conspiracy theory about Russian bots... no idea...

  1. The echo chamber/ network effect / breeding ground, populated by people who sit around in their pajamas all day

  1. It's all just the same few people posting anyway

  1. Mothers tend to get judged all the time, so judging others is their way of getting their own back. Mothers who are feeling insecure because they have achieved little other than breed.

Does anyone actually recognise themselves in this misogynistic pile of stereotypical assumption?

Some of the contributors on the MN reddit are the true scum of the earth. I can’t imagine what they’d be like IRL but they are certainly people I’d never want to know.

*please note the operative word ‘some’.

Tells me a lot about them... Ageist, sexist, racist, classist. Nuff said.

Do you mean the MNTrolls sub or the transgender one, it? Hmm

I wonder why they seem to think Mumsnet is more "transphobic" than Reddit's gender critical forum, which seems to have laxer rules than Mumsnet from what I've seen (which isn't much to tell the truth).
I'd also be curious to know how many of the derailers that pop up here hang out over there.

  1. Uneducated. Ha hahahahaha. To bastardise a quote from the late, great, Magdalen Berns - These kids minds are so open, their brains are falling out.

It's become very fashionable to counteract any opinion, not with reasoned argument, but with accusations of being right wing, old, uneducated, easily led.

It's easier than having to think, I suppose.

As an MNer who tries to avoid the trans threads I think the above (as amended) are fairly close to the mark, but I'd say the whole thing is fairly limited to the FWR board.

If you want an "outsider's" opinion.

They got cautioned a while back under May's government due to the amount of transphobia coming from Mumsnet and they put out a warning to their members

Oh, these cuddly little authoritarians. None of that actually happened, but what fun to imagine that it did!

It’'s worth knowing there's tons of people on mumsnet who aren't transphobic, who are just parents looking to find out what baby formula is safe or worry about the HRT shortage

Proper, womanly topics, staying nicely in our lanes like good little girls.

These people have achieved little in their lives and end up at a loss with what to do with themselves

Arf! Mate, you have no idea the successful, accomplished women who post here. More projection than IMAX.

Because mumsnet is full of cunts whose greatest achievement in life is breeding.

Nothing says Progressive Values like calling women cunts Grin

Yeah, on reflection, this is all the response it really needs.

I know, right Terry?! Yikes! Normal women are getting infected.

Does this still makes us cunts, though, I wonder? Or is that just for “breeders” 🧐

It's the usual reason. A lot of women talking, without men to supervise them, makes misogynist nervous.
Although my favourite batshit conspiracy theory around gender critical women is how 'terfs' originated in the 80s by Ronald Reagan secretly funding right-wing nuns to stop trans healthcare.
Are there any Reagan-funded nuns on FWR? Come on. Put your hands up.

The usual lazy stereotyping, then.

'Uneducated' briefly surprised me, since I thought the stereotype of Mumsnetters was that we all have (or claim to have!) more degrees than anyone could possibly need. Then I remembered that their idea of 'education' is 'Repeat after us: TWAW' - and it began to make sense.

No. But there is something that someone once posted on this board that I do recognise. They said that motherhood has a radicalising effect. I 100% see myself in this. I didn’t notice just how sexist and misogynistic our society (including many movements in feminism) is until my biology came into play. I now understand the immutable effects that biology has. While I am not wholly gender critical (I think socialisation has much more of reality than many GC feminists like to admit) and obviously not transphobic (my opinions on the importance of sex apply just as much to trans people and are in no way aimed at alienating them or oppressing them) I’m sure some people (particularly young or Male bodied people whose lives haven’t been affected by their biology in the same way) wouldn’t understand and might assume I’m a terf for saying that biology is important and sex cannot be changed.

If we are all so uneducated and thick, then why don’t some of those posters from Reddit come here and debate us? They would easily win surely? Smile

Is that because some daughters have penises? Confused

I don't understand this. Surely most GC feminists believe gender is nothing but socialisation, and that's why they object to the medicalisation of people who aren't gender conforming.
