Genius judge in Iowa believes baby-raping defendent is no threat thanks to new identity as lady

After fifteen (15) cases of sexual abuse of minors ages 1 (yes one year old) up to 13, a prisoner named Joseph Smith was sentenced to prison "indefinitely." Four years later, the newly minted Josie Smith is free as a bird, thanks to hormone therapy lowering her testosterone levels.
The fact that Smith was under 25, never had a long-term relationship, and abused both girls and boys, in addition with significantly lowering his testosterone levels all contributed to his likelihood to reoffend falling to around 20%.

On the decision to free Smith, Iowa Attorney General spokesman Lynn Hicks said: “We don’t believe we have evidence sufficient to prove Josie Smith has a significant chance of re-offending.”

It utterly baffles me that multiple paedophile rapists can ever be considered low risk of reoffending. In fact any multiple rapist is at exceedingly high likelihood of reoffending.

The truth is that, like the probation board in the John Worboys case, they feel confident in releasing him knowing full well that it's not their families being put in danger, but the families in the poorer communities where prisoners get released. It's the ultimate luxury belief, that it's better to give dangerous men a chance at rehabilitation however slim, than keep the public safe.

The American legal system baffles me. They incarcerate innocent people on Death Row for years and then execute them, and many of their lawyers seem ludicrously underqualified.

Wesley Allen Dodd is the first person I thought of when I read this. Over and over Dodd was caught. Over and over he was enabled by lenient judges and prosecutors who taught him that no matter how many children he molested they always had his back, until they didn't.

With no job prospects and their felon status very clear to any employer that checks (another US requirement), they aren’t going to be able to afford to stay anywhere very nice. Add to that the general requirement for the neighbourhood to be alerted when a sex offender moves nearby ... it’s very very likely he will be shifted to a poor area

If there's anyone reading this with expert knowledge of paedophilia, can you confirm the impression I have that once a person (usually a man) develops paedophile tendencies, they're almost certainly going to remain that way for life? If this is so, for the good of society as a whole, and especially its most vulnerable members, I can't see how we can justify ever releasing someone who has sexually abused children. They will never be safe.

Prisoners may occasionally get released into wealthy communities when they were originally wealthy and have family to return to but the vast majority of housing for ex offenders are in poor parts of town, or even more likely poor towns far away from where the people making these decisions live.

Why do these transitioning males get given the benefit of the doubt against common sense? Is it naivety from the judges who somehow believe that rape of children is caused by too much testosterone? Is it misogyny that makes them believe that the future prospects of one man is worth more than the safety of his past and future victims? Or is it that subconsciously the judge knows that their wealth insulates them from the consequences if it goes wrong because this rapist will never be placed next door to their family, or down the road from where their kids go to school?

I actually read this bit as “We —don’t— believe we have evidence sufficient to prove Josie Smith has a significant chance of re-offending.” Or “We don’t believe we have evidence sufficient to prove Josie Smith DOESN'T have a significant chance of re-offending.” Surely that’s the premise they should start from
