Apparently they were being blackmailed and so came out in a video, which is a bit shit for them.

I watched her coming out video - she handled it incredibly well. I particularly liked her saying to her blackmailers "this one's for you".

I thought it was interesting that she doesn't believe in labels, that 'I am just me' - more people need to think like this and not try to compel speech or trample on rights. More Nikkies and fewer Stephanies are needed.

I like their attitude in terms of saying 'I'm just me', but it's the same old sexist stereotypes being trotted out about wanting to play with make-up and barbies and not wanting to wear trousers that convinced them they were really a 'girl'. Also sounds like their mother really wanted a girl and Nikki was psychologically damaged by that.

Not sure to what extent this is accurate:

Yes, granted, Nikkie does all the glam makeup and hair stuff and Instagram looks.

But: she's also a beauty icon despite really falling short of what is considered "conventionally attractive" for women: way too tall, far too big, round faced and blotchy skinned.

What I really, really like about Nikkie - despite her personal style being way too over the top for my own sense aestethics - is how upfront she has always been about what she looks like without all the gunk. Her Power of Makeup videos, in particular, expose the lies behind conventional beauty pretty spectacularly.

I've never felt that Nikkie thought "womanhood" depended on looking like an Instagram model, and have always seen her as someone who was radically blunt about what real women look like in everyday and just how far removed from reality that high glam look was - however much she might personally enjoy and financially benefit from managing to project it.

I actually really like Nikkie for this, despite lacking both the talent and the desire to achieve her looks.

Also, all trans politics aside: blackmailing people about personal matters is the hallmark of an irredemable arsehole.

If you watch the full video, it's clear that Nikki's mother has, shall we say, heavily-influenced Nikki's transition. Nikki says that her mother "knew" from pregnancy that Nikki was a girl, and that when Nikki was born, was still a girl despite her biology.

Nikkie has 12.5 million subscribers so is not insignificant. The makeup style is of a certain type but Nikkie is one of the few people who really shows themself completely makeup free at the start of videos and looks completely unrecognisable by the end. Certainly a great artist.

See, THIS I actually happen to think is a very valid point. Along with "how many of these mega-influencers are in their late thirties to fifties - i.e. at an age when a professional woman will actually have the income to waste insane amounts of cash on beauty products? (Well, I suppose Tati Westbrook might qualify - though I'm not sure she quite makes that league. Marlena Stell arguably used to but basically transitioned from being an influencer to becoming an entrepreneur early on.)
