on the upside, not a lot of agreement!

Trans and intersex athletes often face discrimination in competitive sports, including being banned from events and stripped of their achievements.

Let’s show our support and tell the world to #LetThemPlay!

Conflating intersex and trans: tick

Being banned from events and stripped of their achievements? Are they talking about Mary Gregory here?

Because I can't think of may other trans athletes recently 'banned'
(though 'banned' is an interesting word here - more like, competed in the wrong sex category, found to be in the wrong sex category through normal tests, and removed from category)

uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/transgender-weightlifter-mary-gregory-raw-powerlifting-federation-094109354.html

I know it's a well-used example, but if I ran in a junior running championship, lifted the trophy, celebrated my win, and then they found I was not a junior. removed my trophy, and stopped me competing again...can I say I was banned and stripped of my trophy?

I guess it sounds more emotive than 'I slipped into the wrong category and got found out'?

I wish this was funnier than it is, but this is UN Women: an organisation founded to be a global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide

Currently managing to halt and reverse progress on meeting women's needs worldwide.

Well done UN Women Star

#LetThemPlay! Of course, but not at the detriment of women and girls.

From the Equality and Human Rights Commission:

Our statement on sex and gender reassignment: legal protections and language

EXTRACT:

In UK law, ‘sex’ is understood as binary, with a person’s legal sex being determined by what is recorded on their birth certificate. A trans person can change their legal sex by obtaining a GRC. A trans person who does not have a GRC retains the sex recorded on their birth certificate for legal purposes.

'Gender’ refers to socially constructed roles of women and men and/or an individual’s conception of their identity. The term is often used interchangeably with ‘sex’, partly in recognition that much of the inequality between women and men is driven by underlying social and power structures rather than by biological sex. Although the Equality Act protects people from discrimination because of their sex, other UK legislation (such as the regulations requiring employers to publish their gender pay gap) refers to gender. This may cause confusion in some circumstances. To avoid any ambiguity, we are reviewing our use of language across our website and publications to ensure clarity and consistency. However, it is important to note that any mistaken or structural use of the term gender does not affect how the law works in practice.

And with regard to the UN - Peter John Dalglish, former UN chief and UN founder of UNICEF - has been arrested in Nepal on child rape charges. To children, aged 12 and 14, were rescued from his custody. He was sentenced on Monday.

Hiding in plain sight, as we see so often - these NGOs are a hotbed for abusers.

They should ask themselves what is cheating? What’s fair competition? Why’s it worse for someone to be stripped of their achievements Hmm than for someone else- a woman- to fail, be pushed out, deterred totally from exercising or competition because acknowledging sex-based reality is unfashionable now and so everyone has to #Let Men Play (in women’s sports..)

That hashtag is so depressing. No-one is stopping anyone from playing. We just want them to play in the correct category.

People of both genders (but disproportionately women because of sport not being seen as a 'feminine' thing from late childhood onwards) are more likely to be prevented from playing/participating by lack of facilities and lack of financial support. How about the UN gets behind campaigns to make sports available in impoverished communities where facilities are scarce and those that do exist face being closed down/sold off. Oh, and promote positive action to provide women-only (by which I mean the female kind of women) and all-girl (yup, female kind of girl) taster sessions, coaching and teams, especially in economically disadvantaged areas. That might make things a bit fairer.

Unwomen is not fit for purpose.

Unicef as pp said has enabled men to abuse children.

That Saudi Arabia has anyrhing to do with the UN with regards to human rights is a joke.

The UN is not fit for purpose in so many ways. It enables men to do wrong by women and children.

Unwomen is not fit for purpose.

Is unwomen a typo or deliberate usage?

As unwomen seems pretty appropriate.

Agree red it’s very unwomanly to include males in women’s sport. What the hell is wrong with these people prioritising men when their entire job relates to protection of women Angry

#LetThemPlay? What's stopping them? They can play - in the category for their sex.

Trans and intersex athletes often face discrimination in competitive sports

Sure. In the sense of 'recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another.'

Sports are divided by sex, not 'gender' because humans are dimorphic. They need to be discriminating.
