YouGov poll finds 56% agree with the right to self identify - poll commissioned by Pink News

The research, conducted by LGBT+ publication Pink News, found that out of 1,720 adults, 56 per cent of them support self-identification, fuelling hopes among campaigners that legislation allowing this will be included in the Gender Recognition Act, which the Government has vowed to reform.

Commenting on the findings, PinkNews CEO Benjamin Cohen said: “More than two years since the prime minister made a groundbreaking pledge in favour of trans equality, it is clear that the public backs reforming the law to allow trans people to self-identify in order to receive a Gender Recognition Certificate.”

In May, transgender women’s rights to use the pond were formalised following a consultation conducted by the City of London Corporation, which canvassed pond users’ attitudes to gender identity and trans women's access to the space.

Similar to PinkNews' findings, the consultation had a similarly positive outcome, finding that 65 per cent of people felt that trans people should not suffer discrimination.

(Clearly the Indie didn't register the number of comments they got at that time about how the London Corporation survey was invalid - or have chosen to ignore them)

These seem to be the survey results and it shows they have avoided any real questions about would you still support self id in prisons, womens refuges etc..

They warm up the sample with questions about gay rights questions first. The self-I’d question is asked without any context of what it means and many people don’t know what they are agreeing with. Clearly designed to elicit a particular answer and of no value in judging real opinion.

Its interesting to note that that the Fair Play for Women poll spelled out the reality of self ID and got very different results (only 18% supported unregulated self ID)

It’s a deliberately poorly worded question - I think people should be able to identify as whatever gender they like. BUT I don’t believe in self ID for the purpose of actually changing sex (in the legal sense). I don’t really care what an individual’s gender identity is, it’s sex that matters.

A few years ago when Self ID was introduced in Ireland, I supported it. Not actively, just, if anyone had asked me I'd have said I was happy it was coming in, that I felt bad for trans people. I had never heard the arguments against, I thought gender identity was a definite thing that scientists knew about, I believed all trans people were transsexual, and I never dreamed that women would be referred to as uterus-havers or all the rest of it and that the existence of biological sex would be denied. I'm angry with myself for not copping on, but I'm also angry at the fact that nobody discussed it fairly and openly in the media.

As Pink News requested the survey I'm guessing Pink News had considerable involvement with it.

As a stand alone question with no context what so ever I'm surprised so many said No, nearly 1/4 is significant for outright No. The Don't knows simply admitting they don't have a clue and playing safe, with further information I think would sway to No. So wouldnt take much to swing that result.

I would have answered that question with an emphatic yes.

Yes, I do agree that anyone and I mean anyone should be allowed to decide for themselves which sex stereotypes of the opposite sex they choose to internalize or externalise, all the way up to the Barbie or G.I. Joe extremes of the Mermaids Jelly Bean scale.

And I am equally emphatically, adamantly opposed to anyone and I mean anyone being allowed to change their legal sex to the opposite sex from the one they were born via any kind of self-id, without safeguarding or gatekeeping.

So, although I too would be one of Pink News 56% saying yes to their question, I have spent the last 17 months actively and on occasion very very publicly campaigning to uphold the sex-based rights of women and girls and against GRA reform in the direction of legal sex by self-id.

Given how vague the question is worded, how devoid of context but especially how manipulative the preceding questions frame the issue, I am actually surprised that the answer is as low as 56%.

People should be able to identify as whatever gender they like IMO.

However sex segregated spaces and services should remain sex segregated. And other people should not be required to "recognise" the new gender.

Meaningless questions get meaningless answers. As a PP said, when you spell out what self-ID actually means the results are very different.

I have in the past commented on self-ID (clearly stating my concerns in their chat/social media section (the bit you get to after completing surveys). Screening out members who would change the poll's results to the opposite of those desired by Pink News?

I used to work for a large trade union and at a high level meeting the idea came up that we should commission some research into pensions. Our policy officer was very straight and said "we can commission research to say whatever we want it to say, but why spend £Xk on something we know isn't credible"

Yup - I used to commission research and that was always my complaint. Why bother to pay for research if it’s just to confirm what you want to hear? What’s the point?

Totally agree Charlie, I would have said yes too as I believe you should have the right to express your gender however you want. However, this doesn't then mean that I agree with self id'ing into women's spaces or legally changing sex markers.

Poor question with obvious outcome, although I am too surprised with how low figure is to that question.
