They were very involved in Roller Derby in Manchester, particularly with queer and trans kids who skate. Manchester Roller Derby have had to release a statement about their actions.

How could they let her off? I was a battered wife in the 80's but I'd rather he had killed me than get involved in stuff like this. there is NO excuse ever.

They had so much access to kids and were/are also on the Unison LBTQ. YOu'd think more would be done.

How was she not sentenced to prison?

I suspect what saved her from prison is that she went to a hospital in a suicidal state and disclosed what was happening. Thank god she did because who knows how many more children would have suffered had she not.

Fully culpable for her own actions though. Low ebb or not this isn’t something many people would do....even in the depths of depression I would have run a mile....to the nearest police station had a man asked me to do this,

Why was she so involved with lgbtq, as a woman in a relationship with a man, presumably a straight woman?

No excuse - though I note she uses the excuse that her boyfriend was "abusive and controlling" but also says she takes full responsibility.

I'm appalled that she didn't get a custodial sentence.

The Roller Derby statement suggests their preferred pronouns are 'they/their'

Fucking hell. Weird that she takes responsibility for it though - its jarring because you never see dudes doing that.

Difficult to see what roller derby could have done though about this. There are people suggesting DBS checks should have been made but if this is her first offence she wouldn't have been flagged by the system anyway.

This is what they say on Facebook:
"As stated we’re looking in to how we can improve and better safeguard people around us. Unfortunately we do not work directly with children or vulnerable adults which doesn’t validate doing a DBS check for our members. In this situation, the person left our membership more than a year ago and a DBS check on our coaches/members still would not have brought this up, as stated earlier. It’s hard to say what our stance is going forward due to the information being released 48 hours ago. We have a lot to discuss, plan and then put in to practice."

Agreed. Perhaps it was insidious? Gradual boundary crossing and normalising abnormal behaviour - boiling frog style?

I'm guessing the sentence is on the lenient side because she is going to be useful to prosecute the ex-partner as yet unnamed.
Sentences for possession of child abuse images are way too low across the board. I have read of many that are suspended or very short. There are so many they hardly make headlines now. Awful. Only reason this is a headline is how rare women's sexual crime is/was.

Manchester Roller Derby has been having a very queer and male intake for a few years. I know women who have left because of roller derby including biological males. Can women have nothing at all to ourselves?
The simplest and most helpful thing they can do for safeguarding is just exclude males again ..

Mirror coverage here, with judge's summing up,

Sentencing Judge Hilary Manley told Nixon-Corfield: “You embarked on a relationship with this man when you were on an extremely low ebb in your life.

"You have suffered and executed your own frailty and I find you were devastated during the course of his suggestion that you become involved in the possession and distribution of those vile images.

''However you are an intelligent thinking person. You did not have to do any of the things asked if you and you did not have a gun held to you head either literally or metaphorically - you were a willing participant."

If someone had a GRC and was born male but had legal recognition requiring they were treated as female and therefore this fact could not be disclosed, how would it be recorded & reported?

Fucking hell. I know this person (just a little bit, shared social circles) she used to date someone else I know.

Why was she so involved with lgbtq, as a woman in a relationship with a man, presumably a straight woman?

She’s bisexual. The person I met her through is another woman.

PP asking why she didn't go to prison.

There is no suggestion I think that she made the images herself > that she was abusing children.

From what I have read, she got a lot harsher punishment than men who "just" have images.
Police and prosecutors have said that there are so many men (NAMALT) downloading these images that they aren't going to bother prosecuting any more. The stats are very high.

I think that this is in the news because it is a very unusual crime for a woman to commit. A man doing this would not be in the news and ?would not be in prison. I might have a google on stats.

The inclusion of it in the news adds to the idea that "women do it too" which is not helpful.

Any download or view of a child being abused adds to the demand for this material and therefore results in more children being abused. Plus people escalate. I thikn they should ALL be prosecuted and sent to prison for a fuckign long time.

Also the roller derby thing is interesting > they were staright out with reassurance. Otehr recent case where a transgender male was convicted of MUCH worse crimes, and involved with the scouts, a diving club (i think it was) and a wheelchair basketball club, no reassurances were forthcoming from any of the orgs which was really fucking weird.

there are some double standards going on here for sure.

Glad she is in prison and hope the boyfriend gets serious time as well.

Someone I know knows her, and her social circle, and has long viewed her as highly vulnerable, and believes she was indeed being coercively controlled. If you are a strong person yourself, and haven't experienced what that can be like, I suspect it is very difficult to imagine.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/paedophiles-child-sex-images-download-prison-sentences-length-increase-solicitor-general-a8481276.html

From August.

"Statistics show that less than a quarter of the 2,528 people sentenced for making, distributing or publishing child sex abuse images in 2017 were jailed, with almost half handed suspended sentences, and one in five given community orders."

They would almost all have been men.

There have been several local councillors found with indecent images in MCR in the last few years. One was a school teacher and a councillor.

None received custodial sentences.

kesstrel

It could well be the case.

I am very aware that people get pissed off with the double standard where men who do this are condemned but with women it is seen that "excuses" are looked for.

However, it certainly seems to be true that very very few female child sex offenders act alone.

It wouldn't be disclosed or reported anywhere. To disclose it publicly would be a crime.

I think guessing this may be a male is off the mark, although I undertsand why, as this is such an unusual crime for a woman + female stats are being skewed hugely by men who self ID as women.

The feminist issue here I think is whether a man who did this would have gone to prison. Whether it would even have been reported let alone so lengthily.
