Mermaids given £500,000 by National Lottery (Sunday Times)

A transgender charity that campaigns for children to be given prohibited sex-change treatment has been awarded £500,000 by the national lottery.

The payment to Mermaids has angered MPs, feminists and women’s organisations, who accuse the charity of bullying doctors, promoting falsehoods and using “emotional blackmail” to pressure parents to support life-changing medical interventions for their children. Mermaids will use the money to create a network of 45 groups nationwide.

Another entitled male defending his and his organisation’s reputation at the expense of women and children- his dismissive response to the legitimate criticism of funding an organisation that promotes actions deemed by many as child abuse says it all - wilful deafness.

Thx again to MP DD for speaking out again - a lone voice in the wilderness of parliamentary representives (sic)- one could be forgiven for thinking that they don’t care about re-election or half of the population’s voting power - and no the excuse of Brexit doesn’t cut it when neglecting such huge issues as this

Strong article. I'm always confused when I read what Mermaids say. Do they deny the studies which show high rates of desistance? Genuine question. It's just such a bizarrely one-eyed organisation. Astonishing that they have been given this money.

Big Lottery has generously funded transgendering projects:
£876,000 since 2015, not counting this £500,000.

I’m lost as to who we do get to vote for though. We are 52 per cent of the UK population but there is not a single major party that is willing to stand up for us. Even the WEP has thrown us to the wind. If we don’t vote that doesnt help either. if you think voting the communists will help kiss goodbye to ever going to the USA.

I don't think they care. Here are two tweets from Susie Green at the World Professional Association for Transgender Health conference, saying
'...surgery should be allowed based on competency NOT age of majority. Psychological assessment should not be needed for surgery' and 'We are not going to accidentally make someone trans, even if we give them hormones... Let's be less concerned about certainty.'

It's almost like we're getting to them, and this was signed off as a deliberate counter attack. But those who will suffer, once again, are children. Children are to be recruited at a local as well as at a national level. And all our towns and cities will have their own chapel to the cult of transgenderism. All paid for by ordinary men and ... bleeders, non-men, non-transwomen, ...

Wow those tweets. What about informed valid consent? What about ensuring that the understanding of the individual patient is in place before that individual might be having extremely invasive medical or surgical interventions with permanent effects on their body...?

I hope that they are even more urgently calling for years of talking therapies to be available to a child or young person to support them, to relieve emotional distress and anxiety, to explore what is underlying any dysphoria and explore their understanding of consequences of different treatments... well before there is even any question of medical or surgical steps being proposed to modify their body....?

I’ve just complained to the National Lottery, pointed out that children are being rendered sterile and mutilated, and told them I will no longer buy a lottery ticket but donate to a women’s charity instead.

The level of institutional support mermaids get is astonishing. Why are Merseyside police so entwined?

If you look up mermaids reports that they have to submit to the charity commission ( 2016-17)- you can see that three of their trustees have been given dispensation. - their names arn’t public. - would love to know who they are. - I’m fact the year before one of the redacted trustees is listed as in charge of safeguarding...

Although in 2017-18 none of the trustees have dispensation. So either they all left of they are now named.

I might to some more digging... but I think that’s really interesting.

Circular isn't it.

Public sector, charities and large organisations fund lobbying organisations who in turn lobby the public sector, charities and large organisations. The Stonewall model.

This time though, it is really dangerous.

The only way to break through the circularity is to complain. Decision makers seem to inhabit a specific Stonewall-influenced bubble, which is not anchored by real world needs and concerns. Individuals, as well as brave journalists, need to call them out. Samesex attraction cannot be conflated with transgenderism, indeed the latter can conflict with the first. And large funders have an absolute duty to prioritise child protection.

Sunkisses · 16/12/2018 08:08

What?! People should pile pressure on the Big Lottery Fund to reverse this decision. They are such a dangerous organisation, and seem determined to trans as many kids as possible, to affirm their own dodgy decisions as parents. Lottery should know they are masquerading as some harmless little support group when they are not

I would have no objection to the donation if I felt the work being done with children was done in a proper medicalised way rather than what I feel Mermaids do which is an affirming approach.

There is no doubt gender identity is an issue for a number of children and these would very much benefit from psychotherapy and counselling in an impartial way.

Gender dysphoria represents a very small number of those who identify as transgender and even within GD transition should never be the first option - quite the opposite. Too many other facts contribute to transgenderism to not investigate these. Abuse, self esteem issues, bipolar disorder, trauma to name a few can create false transgenderism.

I am transsexual myself and have been since a very young child many many years ago. Issues of GD in those days were recognised but they were never the first choice in the way they appear to be now. As the old saying goes "expect horses not zebras".

Growing up every child struggles with identity....its a part of growing up. Let's stop turning these normal struggles into an automatic medical condition (transsexualism) or introducing the idea that transition is a simple solution.

Yet another good article from the Sunday Times.
Recently they seemed to have stopped comments under a range of articles - often more 'sensitive' subjects. Maybe they're also getting the legal threats from the usual suspects?
