LiverpoolReSisters Fri 28-Sep-18 16:54:43

IMPORTANT NOTICE - It is with regret that we have to announce that our meeting in Leeds cannot go ahead due to late and unreasonable cancellation. We will be emailing attendees shortly with more information. We condemn this act of silencing women. More to follow.

LiverpoolReSisters Fri 28-Sep-18 16:55:44

Check out @Womans_Place_UK’s Tweet:

Floisme Fri 28-Sep-18 16:58:51

Very sorry to hear this. Please can you tell us the venue as I occasionally travel to Leeds and would hate to unknowingly give them my custom.

TurfClub Fri 28-Sep-18 17:00:12

This is Leeds City Council, you will be imprisoned if you don't give them your custom, if you live in Leeds. No choice.

WomenMakePurchasingDecisions Fri 28-Sep-18 17:02:16

I have no words. It’s a FUCKING MEETING.

SunsetBeetch Fri 28-Sep-18 17:07:43

Made aware by whom? Obviously didn't bother to check WPUK's website

Anlaf Fri 28-Sep-18 17:08:04

The council cancelled it? That really really is outrageous.

Pinned tweet on Leeds Council twitter:

A century after the first women in the UK got the vote, next week's @LightNightLeeds will see #Suffragettes Leonora Cohen & Mary Gawthorpe return to modern day #Leeds! The piece by @Projstudio sheds new light on these two truly extraordinary women #Vote100

Datun Fri 28-Sep-18 17:08:53

Jesus. This is insane.

stillathing Fri 28-Sep-18 17:09:09

This needs to make the news

MsMcWoodle Fri 28-Sep-18 17:09:34

Do you think that they did this on purpose? Did they take the booking with the idea of cancelling it at the last minute? So it would be too late to get anything else.
Leeds does not have a good reputation.

happydappy2 Fri 28-Sep-18 17:09:41

That is beyond shocking-why on earth can't women get together to discuss law policy that affects them negatively? On the plus side there must be some press mileage in this-it proves women are being silenced.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe Fri 28-Sep-18 17:10:00

We're meeting up in Leeds anyway.

Anlaf Fri 28-Sep-18 17:10:55

the views...are not in line with Leeds City Council's values on gender and equality

Anyone know if LCC is one of the "gender" equality policy councils who don't talk about sex?

OvaHere Fri 28-Sep-18 17:11:16

This isn't surprising at all. I've been expecting Leeds to go badly out of all the places these meetings have been held.

Leeds - Mermaids

Leeds - West Yorkshire Police

Join the dots.

crossparsley Fri 28-Sep-18 17:11:23

Leeds Council's 'values on gender and equality' are in clear conflict with the Equality Act. Bunch of vile-os. Happy to support a quick challenge to this nonsense.

buttonmoonb4tea Fri 28-Sep-18 17:12:18

HandsOffMyRights Fri 28-Sep-18 17:12:20

It's despicable. Utterly cowardly.

The irony that the council celebrates that it's been 100 yrs since women were treated like shit for organising, silenced, pelted, force fed, beaten, berated, humiliated and labelled, that this council is basically abusing us again.

I'm so angry about this civil liberty being stripped. We need legal action now.

PetraDelphiki Fri 28-Sep-18 17:12:52

stillathing Fri 28-Sep-18 17:13:47

We're meeting up in Leeds anyway

Glad to hear it!

GulagsMyArse Fri 28-Sep-18 17:15:05

Jesus, this is appalling

TheBodyguardWasRubbish Fri 28-Sep-18 17:15:38

This looks very sinister & calculated. I think they planned to cancel all along & did so at the last minute in order to try to prevent the meeting going ahead.

MsMcWoodle Fri 28-Sep-18 17:15:51

So glad the meeting is going ahead!

Redkeyboard Fri 28-Sep-18 17:18:46

What views specifically Leeds Council?

Elletorro Fri 28-Sep-18 17:19:32

Get your soapboxes out Leeds lassies. The weathers good. Do it on the steps of the town hall.

Elletorro Fri 28-Sep-18 17:20:22

Someone can get hold of a mic and a loudspeaker and you’re away.

HandsOffMyRights Fri 28-Sep-18 17:24:25

Don't let the council go quietly. Hold it on their doorstep

HumphreyCobblers Fri 28-Sep-18 17:25:41

Jesus wept.

I hope this bloody backfires on them.

How DARE a council do this?

RaininSummer Fri 28-Sep-18 17:25:52

This is disgusting. So glad to hear that some of you will still get to meet. I imagine the speakers had already arrived on Leeds. It is becoming more and more important for women to form local campaign groups.

groundcontroltomontydon Fri 28-Sep-18 17:30:15

And this isn't a violation of the Human Rights Act (s 6(1) ('It is unlawful for a public authority to act in a way which is incompatible with a Convention right'; sch 1, art 11 ('Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and to freedom of association with others') how exactly??

Datun Fri 28-Sep-18 17:32:05

Dear lord. Someone mentioned about been chained to railings and going on hunger strike. Is this really what women will have to do in order to be bloody well heard?

Well they won't stop this woman. And many others like me. This is just galvanising so many more women into action.

ShackUp Fri 28-Sep-18 17:32:10

Leeds is HQ of Mermaids.

Guys - this is actually potentiall Fun. They’re subject to FOIA - so someone should draft a careful
FOI request and send it in...

FermatsTheorem Fri 28-Sep-18 17:39:09

Leeds = Mermaids
Leeds = WYP
Leeds = Mesmac (sexual health charity which thinks it's okay for service providers to form sexual relationships with service users)
Leeds = council which introduced a legalised red light district within which a prostituted woman has been murded and local women have been sexually assaulted, kidnapped and raped.

Leeds is beginning to look like the women hating capital of the UK.

TurfClub Fri 28-Sep-18 17:41:28

This is the person who seems to be behind the cancellation

MrsAird Fri 28-Sep-18 17:44:06

Is it time for a judicial review?

For JR the respondent has to be a public authority (check), the action has to be brought within 3 months (check), and the action complained of has to be so unreasonable that no public authority could reasonably have done it. Discriminating against women wanting a public meeting to discuss changes to the law seems to me to comfortably fit those criteria.

It would be important to crowdfund enough money to buy an insurance policy against paying the other side's costs.

There are other threads with willing lawyers on them, eg

ToeToToe Fri 28-Sep-18 17:44:17

Get your soapboxes out Leeds lassies. The weathers good. Do it on the steps of the town hall.

I would LOVE to see this. Please do this. Suffragettes managed with a megaphone.

But, yeah, Leeds, Mermaids, WYP..

So sorry to hear this - I hope you can all meet in pubs or something...

CaptainMarvelDanvers Fri 28-Sep-18 17:46:32

I bet they knew they were going to cancel the event well before today. The last minute cancellation was probably to hinder them finding a new venue in time for the meeting.

ToeToToe Fri 28-Sep-18 17:47:40

Oh Laura's crowdfunding for (among other things) £1500 for new clothes. That's nice.

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles Fri 28-Sep-18 17:49:02

Horrified to hear this. Truly horrified. Never felt such genuine fear for the future of freedom of speech and belief.

ToeToToe Fri 28-Sep-18 17:49:39

They have always managed to find a new venue in the past. This does happen every time - it does seem deliberate to leave it so late.

CaptainMarvelDanvers Fri 28-Sep-18 17:50:06

Use a charity shop like the rest of us.

Also I have PCOS and I can’t get laser treatment covered so why do they expect it?

PlonitbatPlonit Fri 28-Sep-18 17:51:19

Can we change the subject line. Yes, the venue has cancelled, and WPUK that some women will therefore choose not to come, but there are plans to hold a peaceful assembly in protest at women's voices being silenced.

Iused2BanOptimist Fri 28-Sep-18 17:51:55

Exactly my thought MsMcWoodle

LittlePearl Fri 28-Sep-18 17:52:46

Is there any way to alert any of the GC journalists to this? Janice Turner, Hadley, James Kirkup? I fear it's our only hope of getting any coverage.

TurfClub Fri 28-Sep-18 17:53:35

Laura's tossed out a nice misogynist slur.

Transwomen are women, obviously.

boldlygoingsomewhere Fri 28-Sep-18 17:54:02

Sadly not surprised that this happened in Leeds. I wouldn’t move there if you paid me. Mesmac, WYP, Holbeck, Mermaids...something is rotten there and it stinks.

Hope you manage to hold the meeting anyway. Love the idea of the megaphone outside the City Hall.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap Fri 28-Sep-18 17:55:38

Janice Turner's already on it. So is Graham Linehan. This is an absolute disgrace. The mealymouthed cowardice, the utter hypocrisy, just breathtaking.

happydappy2 Fri 28-Sep-18 17:57:39

Janice Turner knows....

TurfClub Fri 28-Sep-18 17:58:56

isn't it good our government is accountable to persecuted minorities like Ms. Ligma Butthole

rainbowgrimm Fri 28-Sep-18 18:03:54

I'd like to apologise on behalf of my City. I'm off to email LCC, they do not represent me & the people I know.

seafret Fri 28-Sep-18 18:07:20

LEEDS - also gangs of men grooming and raping young girls

Ginazon Fri 28-Sep-18 18:08:47

I’m also ashamed of my city. I’m on my way in to join them.

Manderleyagain Fri 28-Sep-18 18:09:26

I don't know anything about the kind of thing you can ask through FOI - but what was the date/time of the complaint, and who made the decision about when to cancel, would be interesting. If the council waited until the last minute to cancel it would be a bad look.

hackmum Fri 28-Sep-18 18:10:08

Fermats: "Leeds is beginning to look like the women hating capital of the UK."

That could be their strapline, couldn't it? "Come to Leeds - the woman-hating capital of the UK"!

There really is a concerted attempt to silence women now: if you're banned from Twitter, banned from advertising on billboards, banned from speaking in public, deleted if you comment on the Guardian, how many options do you have left? I suppose it's only a matter of time before they ban us from speaking in the street with a megaphone. Or, next stage, without one.

Redkeyboard Fri 28-Sep-18 18:10:39

You can ask for information held about and correspondence regarding WPUK etc

CecilyNeville Fri 28-Sep-18 18:13:48

They should hold the meeting where they are, right there on the steps! It's a nice big space; they might get a crowd gathering.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel Fri 28-Sep-18 18:14:34

Leeds is no place for women...

PlonitbatPlonit Fri 28-Sep-18 18:14:57

I think that's the plan! See twitter for some lovely purple-white-green decorations of the civic hall.

Ereshkigal Fri 28-Sep-18 18:15:16

Agree. Megaphone. Leeds town hall or Hyde Park.

PlonitbatPlonit Fri 28-Sep-18 18:17:48

Women are assembling at

Leeds Civic Hall
Calverley Street

Anlaf Fri 28-Sep-18 18:21:07

Go, you brave majestic buggers, you. I am delighted to see on twitter that you've plastered the civic hall with suffragette colours

SunsetBeetch Fri 28-Sep-18 18:24:43

Go, you wonderful women! Turn the negative into a positive again!

Sarahconnor1 Fri 28-Sep-18 18:26:27

Pansexual humanist Richard helped make this happen.

Go you, you raging misogynist.

NewWomensMovement Fri 28-Sep-18 18:32:09

God that Richard looks dodgy.

QuilliamCakespeare Fri 28-Sep-18 18:33:08

Twats. Ring 101 and log it as a hate crime. Apparently that's what we do when anyone wants to speak their opinion now so it should work both waysangry

Sarahconnor1 Fri 28-Sep-18 18:33:46

Those on Twitter might want to comment

TheCountessofFitzdotterel Fri 28-Sep-18 18:35:55

Green Party member, his pronouns are they and them...

ToeToToe Fri 28-Sep-18 18:36:01

That vile Richard has been all over Twitter recently. A real woman hater, that one.

Let's hope his sordid little victory doesn't backfire the way Posie's poster removal did wink

enrichedatthegulags Fri 28-Sep-18 18:37:43

"their plan was uncovered" he sounds like thinks he's Sherlock Holmes.
What a time to be alive!

Floisme Fri 28-Sep-18 18:45:16

Excellent that you’re going ahead. I bet you’ll get far more coverthan if you’d been hidden away inside the Civic Hall. Another own goal by the TRA lobby.

SunsetBeetch Fri 28-Sep-18 18:56:12

It's going to be Postergate all.over again!

Pacers Fri 28-Sep-18 18:57:44

This is outrageous.

I don’t have a Twitter account, but have looked on Janice Turner’s thread and the editor of the Yorkshire Post seems to be asking a reporter to look at the story.

breastfeedingclownfish Fri 28-Sep-18 18:58:51

Fuck sake. It only makes me more determined. Fuck them

TheElementsSong Fri 28-Sep-18 19:01:47

I hope everyone gathering outside the civic hall stays safe. What happens if the council call the police to disperse the women gathering?

🤔 Actually on second thoughts, that would make pretty ironic optics given the council’s tweet about the suffragettes.

Angryresister Fri 28-Sep-18 19:16:24

Awful, but not surprising given the things that seem to have become acceptable in Leeds and the organisations involved in trying to shut down women's voices. We are angry and we are not going to shut up.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe Fri 28-Sep-18 19:31:21

We’ve found an alternative venue! Meeting getting ready to start.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly Fri 28-Sep-18 19:36:04

woah! just seen the post about the alternative venue!

and yet she persisted

SPOFS Fri 28-Sep-18 19:36:37

Let's turn this into another own-goal for the TRAs. Has this been sent to the Daily Mail, Times, Spectator, etc.?

Knicknackpaddyflak Fri 28-Sep-18 19:44:01

Someone mentioned about been chained to railings and going on hunger strike. Is this really what women will have to do in order to be bloody well heard?

I warned my other half last night that at some point one of us will have to walk under a fucking racehorse.

Leeds. No place for Women.

2rebecca Fri 28-Sep-18 19:44:52

Getting our meetings shut down and posters taken down shows their intolerance. They'd do better ignoring us and having large meetings and posters of their own and concentrating on progressing their views rather than trying to stop ours being heard

speakingwoman Fri 28-Sep-18 19:45:56

Well done, I’m really sorry about this

FermatsTheorem Fri 28-Sep-18 19:46:04

Great work with the alternative venue.

I should say I lived in Leeds for Finley's years and love the place and it's people - but the city council and the institutions with the power are a shower of shite.

Power to the brave women attending tonight.

gendercritter Fri 28-Sep-18 19:46:13

I was so angry reading this but now I just think 'you utter wazzocks.' Anyone doing any research into the meeting will see that it was going to be quite reasonable and straightforward. Lots of people watching on will only look at the council's actions and think what the hell? There was no reason to prevent them meeting at all. It will only add to our growing numbers. V glad to hear another venue was found.

Ereshkigal Fri 28-Sep-18 19:48:48

Oh that's brilliant that you've found a new venue. Courage calls to courage thanks

Ereshkigal Fri 28-Sep-18 19:50:00

I warned my other half last night that at some point one of us will have to walk under a fucking racehorse.

It really is looking like it.

Ereshkigal Fri 28-Sep-18 19:51:17

They'd do better ignoring us and having large meetings and posters of their own

They know most people agree broadly with us and that we're more convincing. They won't admit it but they do.

ApocalypseNowt Fri 28-Sep-18 19:53:32

I'm in Leeds and have just seen a group walk past with 'GRA does not threaten women's rights' placards sad

I was hoping to run into your group tbh. Stay strong ladies, we're not all bad in Leeds!

Manderleyagain Fri 28-Sep-18 19:54:07

2rebecca. Saggy Don't tell them!

Manderleyagain Fri 28-Sep-18 19:54:42
