A letter to a female transactivist

Just saw this on Twitter. Brilliant

"A man is not a woman. There’s no medical procedure that can change sex in humans or any other mammal. When you fight for the right of men to call themselves “women” and enter woman-only spaces on the basis of their say so, you are doing what Men’s Rights Activists have always done. You are violating women’s boundaries for personal gain. You are allowing men to colonise women’s spaces. You are creating a climate of fear where women and girls will start to withdraw from public life, because all semblance of safety – access to sex seggregated spaces when they are vulnerable – will be destroyed. Your activism is not feminism, it’s at best a misguided naiveté, and at worst opportunism to get ahead while throwing other women under the bus. And by the time you realise how foolish you’ve been, because you are “just” a woman in those men’s eyes, it’ll be too late. The way entitled men disrespect women, the way they mow women down, the way they put their own needs, feelings and wants before women’s lives and livelihoods, they’ll do the same to you when you’re no longer useful to them."

Can someone tweet this at Ash Sarkar, that’s who this put me in mind of? Although at thirty she doesn’t even really have the excuse of being a bit young and clueless like so many of the other daft handmaidens.

LaSqrrl Sun 27-May-18 09:25:42

And tweet it to Penny Red. Clueless woman who will never get a clue.

ChampagneCommunist Sun 27-May-18 09:27:30

Amazingly well said!

ChattyLion Sun 27-May-18 10:34:21

Well said about trying to whip up divides between the generations of women who care about women’s rights. Because if we worked together we would be too powerful, and a threat basically.

TerfsUp Sun 27-May-18 10:41:27

I would love to tweet it to one particular female TRA of my acquaintance. But she is so woke and so up her own arse that she wouldn't be able to understand it.

This.

Except the Gender Recognition Act does not control access to sex segregated spaces. So none of the dystopian future envisaged by the writer of the letter would occur.

But we can gloss over this inconvenient fact by drawing comparisons with PIE.

"as I do re the parallels with the PIE tactics from the 60s and 70s."

Though interestingly I have just seen this direct assertion by a 'Trans Legal Historian (with a) Newly-minted PHD'

SeahorsesAREhorses Sun 27-May-18 15:17:05

...but in the real world Sarah we are seeing women losing sex based rights and protections, safe guarding put aside so that sad men and boys feel happier. That's happening now, in our country, in the name of inclusiveness.

What I don't get is this...

Trans people are at risk. I am not denying that.

A trans woman may very well be at risk in a male prison (there was a truly horrible case of a trans woman in a male police holding cell in the US e.g. and I wouldn't want to be a trans man [aka the only person with a vagina] in a male prison either.)

I am not denying that.

And I think it's horrible. The thought does not fill me with glee or whatever.

But the solution isn't opening up women's only spaces to everyone

This will simply put women and girls in the situation I already described above....

How is that a solution?

There are too many people that either don't understand that or believe that it's an acceptable trade-off (or even desirable...)

It makes me incredibly angry.

Btw, I recently learned that pepper sprays aren't even legal in the UK. Which is just.... Scary.

Hm. I personally feel like it's more complicated.

I don't mind sharing my bathroom with a trans woman.

There are people that seem to truly feel that they were / are supposed to be the other sex, go through considerable difficulties to get as close as possible etc.

I have a lot of sympathy for them, btw.

The issue is opening women's spaces up to anyone that claims to be female/a woman.

Whether that is a 200 pound wrestler, a convicted sex offender or the trans woman living next door.

SeahorsesAREhorses Sun 27-May-18 16:33:50

..and also it isn't women and girls job to make sad men and boys happy, even if their intentions are completely honourable.

Anushkashsmum Sun 27-May-18 19:52:18

I've got a new label... I'm a Handmaiden!

wishiwassizeeight Sun 27-May-18 21:19:22

Really nothing to be proud of Anushka - just a word for women who throw other women under the bus to gain male approval.

Pretty shameful really.

username122 Sun 27-May-18 21:23:08

Wow. Accidentally stumbled upon the disgusting and prejudiced side of mumsnet. Now I understand why it gets such bad press

LastGirlOnTheLeft Sun 27-May-18 22:00:22

Anushka and Username....shame on YOU!! Stay away from my children - they are not allowed near the likes of you.

Anushkashsmum Sun 27-May-18 22:12:24

Shameful lol.. I'm proud to be caring, loving and not narrow minded.. My ex partner was trans and a lovely woman.. Also, lots of my friends are transdendered and are lovely people.... Get a life for goodness sake!

Anushkashsmum Sun 27-May-18 22:16:27

As for keeping away from your children... Are you scared being trans is contagious lol... What if your child wants to change sex.. Would you disown them?

SeahorsesAREhorses Sun 27-May-18 22:45:40

How do people change sex Anush?

wishiwassizeeight Sun 27-May-18 22:59:33

We are not narrow minded.

We are just awake.

DickTERFin Sun 27-May-18 23:11:25

Shouldn't it be "Aunts" or "Commanders Wives" rather than Handmaids?

In the book at least, it was they who wantonly participated in the oppression of other women.

wishiwassizeeight Sun 27-May-18 23:16:26

Watching The Handmaids Tale tonight I was struck by how much the Aunts put me in mind of the transmaidens.
