www.teamusa.org/usa-weightlifting/live

Featuring 9 woman and a man, Laurel Hubbard. He is likely to medal.

This is the no-weight-limit category, hence the biologically female athletes are fairly 'gender-non-conforming' because it's advantageous to be carrying extra fat if you aren't subject to a bodyweight category.

So having a bloke in this category definitely uncool.

What do you mean it’s advantageous to be carrying the extra weight?
Can you lift more the bigger you are?

Report
VivaLeBeaver · 05/12/2017 22:19

The more you weigh the bigger you are, the bigger you are the easier it is to lift weights as part of that increase in size is bigger arms and legs and therefore bigger muscles.

Oh god, of course Blush

Ecuador is just lifting them like cotton buds! What a woman!

Wouldn’t normally watch anything like this but interested to see what the commentators will say.

I have never watched weightlifting other than Olympic finals before (and even then not with much enthusiasm) but this is quite compelling. Also interested at how the commentators will fudge around the elephant in the room.

Poor Ecuador, someone has majorly messed that up for her.

I think it's not just the extra muscle but also the fat insulates the muscle making it easier to lift or something.

Holley Mangold, US Olympic heavyweight lifter weighed around 400lb when competing.

It's great to have Laurel showing us how it's done. What a bro pro.

I wonder how the female commentator really feels, given she’s an ex-competitor.

This is awful.

Oh look. Laurel is wearing pink trainers 🙄

Laurel is 10 years older than every other competitor.

Hubbard's lifting technique is weird. It's like he's scared, like slow-motion.

I think that was Hubbard's stronger discipline, so if Robles makes her first clean + jerk (150kg) then it's done, as Hubbard would need to lift 152kg or possibly 153kg, which I don't think he's capable of.

However he seems to be pretty much nailed on for silver, as he's 5kg ahead of the 3rd place athlete.

great lift from Mexico, means Hubbard has to start at 144kg. Hopefully he can't lift it.
